Set at Christmas, this passionate romance is full of intrigue, fun and romance. This romp is a great take-off on regency romances, complete with a ridiculous mother trying anything to find a rich match for her daughters, pompous gentlemen and secret liaisons. But it is also a romance between two wounded people who are afraid to give love a chance. I love that the characters are flawed and that they are realistic about their place in society. The hero is one of the many men of nobility, a Texan without an actual title, who loses themselves to scientific pursuits and has little time for women and marriage. He is especially not interested in the silly debutantes his sister puts in front of him. But the sparks fly when he agrees to a fake engagement to a widow who must accept the scandal of her mother's past. This is atmospheric, deeper-than-the-usual regency tale and there is even a mystery to be solved. The narrator is perfect, with a deep British voice that even does a good Texas accent. This is a stand-alone follow-up to The Lady's Guide to Deception and Desire and it makes the book even more fun to read that book first. All the books include references to the invaluable Lady's Guide to Everything Useful book that the heroines discover. A great, short holiday romp!

Sexy and fun take-off on regency romances!

Received the Audible version for review. Would highly recommend this story.
First of all I loved the musical effects.
Excellent story about how scandals affect a lady and how a man comes to terms with his own hatred of his father. Invited to his sister's for the holiday she wants to see him find happiness like she has so invites single women of marriageable age also. He meets his intended at the museum where she thinks he's a thief. A miss understanding occurs and when they get it settled he remembers her from his childhood in England. He ask her to pretend to be his intended at his sister's house party and he will help her make a suitable match. Interesting story line of how they come together and fall in love.

Archaeologist and explorer Ethan Burnell has no intention of staying in England for long and is eager to return to his exploration in the Yucatan as soon as he’s able. He has even less interest in finding a wife, despite his sister’s best efforts. She’s hosting a Christmas house party and has invited several ladies of marriageable age, leaving Ethan feeling a bit cornered.

Cornelia Mortmain has no marriage prospects, though she had hoped once to find a true partner. Now widowed and faced with scandal thanks to her mother’s escapades as well as the circumstances of her late husband’s death, that hope is shriveling. Brash American Ethan Burnell is precisely the type of man she generally avoids, but there’s the slightest chance that his interest in her could increase the level of interest she receives from other men. On the off chance of this being helpful for her, Cornelia grudgingly agrees to Ethan’s scheme to protect himself from the marriage-minded mamas and daughters in attendance at the party. Now he and Cornelia must simply convince the guests of their undying love for one another.

This was a fast-paced romp with a rather starchy heroine and a hero with no interest in marriage, or so he thinks. Their attraction is rather instant, but it also builds upon a connection they had forged as children, so I thought this was a neat way to feature the childhood friends to lovers trope in with a fake relationship. This book maintains a hint of gothic feel and the narration pulled me into the story quite well. Cornelia was a bit difficult to like thanks to her tendency toward snappishness and yet, this prickliness was something that made her very relatable for me and made perfect sense given everything she’d been through thanks to her mother’s and her late husband’s scandals. Ethan was a bit ramshackle in his courtship and it took a while for him to get his head on straight and realize what he truly did want from life as far as relationships go. Fortunately, Cornelia was a match for him in every way and refused to settle for less than everything he had to offer and an equal partnership. I loved that she stood up for herself and her two aunts were fabulous supporting characters to a charming, fast-paced story.

The Lady’s Guide to Scandal AUDIO by Emmanuelle de Maupassant is a relatively short Regency type romance featuring Cornelia Mortmain and Ethan Burnell. They first meet as children, but many years pass until a scuffle in the British Museum where Cornelia is a volunteer. Ethan has become a famous adventurer who has delivered many of his findings to the museum in anticipation of an exhibit. Cornelia is hoping to get a preview when he comes upon her. She spies him and thinks him a thief, attacking him but losing the battle. Later her aunts drag her to a lecture where she hopes he won’t recognize her. He does and together they launch a plot wherein they pretend to be in love, protecting him from husband hunting females, and making her look more attractive to potential suitors. Naturally, it doesn’t work out as planned.

This was a fun story to listen to between Cornelia’s fear of scandal and Ethan’s “Texas” accent. They are an engaging couple, each having to rid themselves of erroneous beliefs about both themselves and one another. It is a loose plot, but more than enough for a romance. Ethan, especially, is an endearing character with his clever sense of humor, his independent spirit, and his secrets. Cornelia meets him head-on in a very entertaining story.

Garth Davis is a competent, hard-working reader who uses his strengths to his best ability. His “Texas” accent is cute, but does portray Ethan’s strengths. It was a good listen.

I enjoyed listening to this book a lot. The heroine is very likable, and sometimes hilarious. As are her aunts (they deserve their own book!). Cornelia has been hurt a lot by the actions of both her parents and her late husband. Not to mention she is victim of gossip and prejudice. But she is a strong willed woman who fights for her luck.
I like the hero as well. Deeply hurt as a child he is protecting himself, so much so that he closed himself off of most human contact. But when Ethan meets Cornelia, she worms herself bit by bit into his heart.

A very enjoyable book, very well written. The narrator did an excellent job, and with the added sound effects the 5 stars are well deserved.

This was my first experience with Emmanuelle de Maupassant's work, and I enjoyed it. Cornelia Mortmain and Ethan Burnell are guests at Ethan's sister's holiday party. The couple agreed to a fake relationship, each for their own reasons. The story was charming and entertaining. There are some descriptive sensual scenes which make this story more appropriate for mature audiences. Gareth J Davies' narration was entertaining. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.
