Resumen del Editor

This is an audio-enhanced audiobook - with music and sound effects - of two of the greatest science fiction classics of all time...in one collection!

H.G. Wells (1866 -1946) - the master of the genre - created his "scientific romances" and set the standard for futuristic literature that also teemed with both social commentary and a prescient view of the world to come.

Enjoy these two classics by the "father of science fiction".

Hard to put down

These were hard to put down

Within the first minute of The Invisible Man ("Millie, her lymphatic maid, had been brisked up a bit by a few deftly chosen expressions of contempt"), we taste the flavor of the subtitle, A Grotesque Romance, along with the traditional take on the novel. Here's one of those, quoted from the website of a paper-book publisher: "An atmosphere of ever-increasing suspense begins with the arrival of a mysterious stranger at an English village inn and builds relentlessly to the stark terror of a victim pursued by a maniacal invisible man." Who'd expect that this classic of the quest for knowledge gone wrong—and one of the longest, best chase scenes in literature (not matched until Stephen King sat down at his Wang word processor)—was so rich with wry humor and razor-sharp language?

The Island of Dr. Moreau is about scientific curiosity, too—gone not just wrong but terribly, gruesomely, horribly wrong. Moreau’s mad-scientist attempts to ‘improve’ animals into humans makes for a creepy and compelling story, even as it raises Big Questions about medical ethics, our relationship with the natural world, and what being human actually means.

Narrator Kevin Theis finds the right tone for each of these two very different novels and delivers an energetic, nuanced performance, backed by sound effects that support the story without getting in its way.
