A gripping, pulse-pounding DI Barton thriller from the top 50 bestselling author, Ross Greenwood
Winter is coming, and Detective Inspector Barton is facing the toughest case of his career...
Ellen Toole's therapist told her to forget the past, but with her family story shrouded in secrecy, that’s easier said than done. The approaching long nights of winter loom threateningly in front of her, and with her mother on her death bed, Ellen has never felt more alone. When it becomes clear that her mother has kept secrets about a history darker than Ellen ever imagined, Ellen must find answers about the past if she has any hope for a future.
DI Barton and his team are still recovering from a particularly tough and grisly case, so a report of a kidnapping, followed by the discovery of two dead bodies, is the last thing they need. There’s a murderer on the loose, and the killer needs to be stopped before they strike again. This winter, there will be vengeance on Ellen's mind, and DI Barton will struggle with his hardest case to date.
How can Barton find the truth, when all the victims and witnesses are dead?

Icy good!

The story itself is well thought out. I like the was Mr. Greenwood creates some very bad killer while at the same time characterizes the victims as people that deserve to be punished.
Great series

However, I was surprised this one begins with a gang rape scene and has another of questionable consent before I needed to stop. dnf
I think if this one did as the two previous books did and delved into why and how the lives of the killers shaped them, it might have a different tone.
But this 'villain' seems to have such a crippling mental illness that she's not even processing her assault, except to murder and move on in life, seeming more concerned that her friend has 7 acres of land, than the fact she has been assaulted.
As the book explores her life it becomes clear she desperately needs assistance and you lose track of her going around murdering, because you just want her to get help.
Her reasoning behind her deeds is also clouded by her complete alternative reality that I hope this ends with her obtaining treatment.... and maybe just one single person in her corner. Holy crap this was a sad story
TW: several unexpected rape scenes
