In this steamy tale by USA Today bestselling author Meghan Quinn, an American searching for her purpose escapes to a Scottish town but finds more questions than answers when she meets a brooding yet handsome handyman.

Freshly fired from her third job in a row, Bonnie St. James has lost her way. So when she and her best friend stumble upon a “help wanted” post to run a coffee shop in the Scottish Highlands, they apply on a whim. Who knows? Maybe traveling to a new place is just what she needs to figure out her next move.

When the friends arrive in the tiny idyllic town of Corsekelly, they instantly fall for the gorgeous Highland landscape and friendly townspeople. But Bonnie finds a less-than-warm welcome in Rowan MacGregor, the rugged local handyman. Busy wrestling his own demons, Rowan’s in no mood to deal with the quirky American - even if she is a bonny lass.

As Bonnie and Rowan’s paths inevitably cross, insults - and sparks - fly. Can the pair build on their similarities to help each other find purpose and direction...and maybe romance too? Or will their passionate tempers fling them apart?

I've got to be honest. I almost quit listening to this one early on. The female lead started out being WAY too quirky and over the top for me, and the narrator gave her such an annoying voice I thought I wouldn't be able to make it through many chapters. I was thinking I had wasted money paying extra for the audiobook...

But one of my favorite things about a well written book is watching the characters grow. I don't want to say much, but I will say that all the characters, especially the obnoxious Bonnie, showed wonderful growth (including getting rid of the loathsome voice). These characters start out as ridiculously immature, led by their emotions, hormones, and circumstances. But all of them learn from their mistakes and become truly wonderful in their own ways.

The heart in this tale takes a little while to find: it's buried under incessant bickering and name calling for a bit. But you've just gotta' love the way the Scottish Highlanders insult people. Yikes! If you're like me and love hearing a Scottish brogue (think Sean Connery), definitely go for the audiobook. The narrators have several lovely versions of that brogue, including one at the car rental place that's just awesome.

While I started out regretting my decision to purchase this book, I've got to say the writer won me over completely. By the time this story was finished I was completely in love with these characters and the town they lived in. I want to go back, so I'm hoping the super sexy kilt wearing professional trainer twins get their own book as well.

BTW, this should be considered an 18+ read. The love scenes are detailed, and adult language runs throughout. If these aren't an issue for you, then pick up this book and enjoy!

So Glad I Stuck With It

It’s a story about two besties in a rut. On a whim they flew to Scotland for six months to run a coffee shop. They both fall in love. It was sweet but not enough drama or grit.

It was ok

Overall, I enjoyed this story. It follows Bonnie and her friend Dakota as they travel to Scotland to find themselves. Bonnie meets Rowan, a really grumpy Scot and the son of the woman who owns the coffee shop that Bonne and Dakota are trying to salvage. I loved the cast of characters and there was definitely a Scottish charm to the book.

Admittedly, something about Bonnie rubbed me the wrong way. She was a bit, in my opinion, whiny and unlikable through much of the story and by the time we reached the part where she really started to find herself, it felt like a little too little, too late. That said, I still found the situations amusing and the general story engaging. So while I wasn't a huge fan of her, overall, this story had more than enough to make the overall story a fun read, or listen as the case may be, for me.

New to me narrators, Paula Nederhorst and Antony Ferguson were both great. They did a fantastic job drawing me into the story and playing multiple roles. Overall, I think that listening to the story enhanced the overall humor (and sometimes angst and sadness) that made this a well rounded story.

Fun overall

This book was hilarious. If you read the “ Mother Road” then you know what kind of hilarity is in store. If you are looking for a great RomCom, then this is it. If your a chick, this is it. If you made it to this review, just get it already.

Laughed so hard I cried.
