Amateurish narration kills classic story.
“THE GODDESS OF DEATH”
by WILLIAM HOPE HODGSON
A thrilling and eerie first tale by this wonderful early author of horror literature.
Unfortunately, this classic story is amateurishly read by a narrator with seemingly no experience.
I'll say here what's wrong in the hopes that the people responsible for producing this can do better in the future.
The narrator's pacing is nonexistent.
He first rushes and then slows his reading. It creates an odd jerky uncomfortable listen.
Narrator Russell Jones starts and stops as he nervously reads the text. It gave me audible whiplash.
Russell Jones reading voice is too breathily eager. He sounds like he’s too close to the mic.
Obviously he’s very nervous. It made the whole listening experience as tense & nervous as he was.
Worse yet, Russell Jones' changes in tone are too strained as he tries to be different characters. Laughingly he makes the secondary character sound like Bullwinkle the Moose.
Really.

I’m not kidding.
Talk about breaking the suspense!
A typical Audible screw-up I've heard too many times: A classic tale is ruined by another amateurish narrator.
Please pay attention Audible.
You can do so much better than charge listeners money and then let classic literature be ruined by bad (cheap I guess) production talent.
I hope that one day, AMAZON (who bought out Audible) will take some of their sickeningly enormous profits and re-do all the wonderful audio-books they've destroyed.
But I won't hold my breath.
