This is clearly for young women
I’m a senior man who should have followed my rule of thumb to avoid novels written by women about women, despite good reviews. This might actually be okay for teenage female readers, if they can get used to the vagaries of the Virtual Voice narration, but I could only make it halfway. I wish more reviews and publishers’ blurbs would more clearly identify books best suited for YAs.

virtual voice natural intonation
I am picturing future generations with the odd flat intonation of the virtual voice. Something is lost. I imagine that it is much less expensive than using a real human actors expertise.

Not a YA read
This may be a good story. It may be a good mystery. The narration was so devoid of emotions that it’s difficult to know you got the fullness of the story. If it were not just for certain surprise revelations, I’m not sure this is much of a story. A real narrator could have worked this story and kept the listener’s attention.

Unfortunately the stand out is a negative; the virtual voice reading the novel.
I love other books by this author, but only the titles with a human narrator. I was determined to give the Virtual Voice a chance. This was the one and only I’ll give. I will not choose a Virtual Voice read book again.
