The Education of Little Tree tells of a boy orphaned very young, who is adopted by his Cherokee grandmother and half-Cherokee grandfather in the Appalachian mountains of Tennessee during the Great Depression.

”Little Tree" as his grandparents call him, is shown how to hunt and survive in the mountains, to respect nature in the Cherokee Way, taking only what is needed, leaving the rest for nature to run its course.

Little Tree also learns the often-callous ways of white businessmen and tax collectors, and how Granpa, in hilarious vignettes, scares them away from his illegal attempts to enter the cash economy. Granma teaches Little Tree the joys of reading and education. But when Little Tree is taken away by whites for schooling, we learn of the cruelty meted out to Indian children in an attempt to assimilate them and of Little Tree's perception of the Anglo world and how it differs from the Cherokee Way.

A classic of its era, and an enduring audiobook for all ages.

Magically heart warming

Still crying a bit. Such a rich and soulful tale. Wonderful performance. Natural history lovers will love this.

I've seen the movie and book is better

I really enjoyed this book, slightly different from the movie which was also really good. the book has more details and since my great grandmother was Cherokee. the book had special meaning to me. a way to connect to my grandmother's life. I think everyone should check it out.

Heard of this book from the Bear Grease podcast wish I knew of it sooner one of my favorites, great listen, I also ordered the book.

This book makes me forgive F. Carter's sins.

I know that some people dismiss this book because of the author's associations.
I loved the book as a child and didn't know the details of the author's sins.
I forgive him because of the book's greatness.

This was a selection from my bookclub. we all agreed it was our favorite book this year.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Little Tree, because I loved his pureness of heart.

What does Johnny Heller bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His intonations and accent were perfect for the characters.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The times when Grandpa let Little Tree choose.

Any additional comments?

A lesson on what society has lost. Although portrayed as simpletons, these people were the one's with the real wisdom.
