When the body of a night watchman is found sprawled in the shadow of a rare 19th-Dynasty mummy case, panic ensues. For no one doubts that the guard's untimely demise is the work of an ancient Egyptian curse. No one, that is, except that tart-tongued Victorian Egyptologist, Amelia Peabody, whose remarkable talent for criminal investigation has frustrated villains from London to Cairo.

Now fresh from her daring exploits in exotic Egypt, Amelia, her sexy archaeologist husband, Emerson, and their catastrophically precocious son, Ramses, have returned to their native England just in time to get wrapped up in the intrigue. It's a mystery worthy of Amelia's superior sleuthing, but can she elude the vile clutches of the real perpetrator long enough to uncover his identity...or is she destined to wind up as his next victim?

this is probably the saddest book yet far. the relationships between the family members were damaged in the previous book, and I hate the niece and nephew.

love these books.

I love this story. As this series develops the characters just get better and more dimensional. the stories are great. This is probably my 4th time through in 20 years or so. First time with audiobooks. Susan really has the characters and delivery down!

This series just gets better!

Another brilliant and entertaining book from Elizabeth Peters. Likewise, Susan O'Malley's talent in narrating Peabody as smart and pretentious yet lovable, is fabulous! Furthermore, Ramses is at his full glorious heroic best in this setting. I chuckled and shook my head through the whole thing.

Loved it! Best one yet. 💖

Another fun romp with Peabody and Co. I only wish adults would listen to Ramses more.

Peabody meets the "MC"!

The narrator was accurate but not English . Not a good choice for Amelia

American accent unacceptable

Reading Elizabeth Peter’s amazing writing, leaves me in awe that someone can create such complicated & amusing scenarios. The humor and imagination in this particular book kept me smiling (except for the gruesome parts). Susan O’Malley makes the story & it’s nuances a success.

Amazing Imagination

I like the story but I wish Susan O'Malley was not the performer. She could not make a distinct voice for each character.

I honestly do not understand how or why anyone enjoys Rosenblat's performance of this book. She has no comedic timing, she reads soooo slowly, and her voices of the characters are all so annoying to me that I cannot stand to listen. I tired, I listened to the whole first half of Crocodile on the Sandbank narrated by Rosenblat, and had to give up. It was so incredibly terrible.

Susan O'Malley on the other hand is SO WONDERFUL!!! She absolutely IS Amelia Peabody, and everything she does with these books is just such fun. She has great comedic timing, and it just makes the whole thing so enjoyable and fun and light.

It is a tragedy that she only did the first 6 books. I would love to listen to the entire series, but I just CANNOT deal with Rosenblat. So instead I have listened to these first 6 books narrated by O'Malley about 4 times each now. And I'll probably listen to them again and again. Someone, PLEASE have Susan O'Malley narrate the rest of the books!!! PLEASE!!!!

Susan O'Malley should be the only Amelia Peabody!

Though I’m late to the Elizabeth Peter fan bus, I make up for it with enthusiasm. The humor, the history, the fast-paced fun, the clever mysteries always just out of the reader’s reach—what’s not to like? This time seeing Victorian London through Peters’ sharp pen was a hoot.

I also adore Susan O’Malley’s performance. Her comic timing suits my idea of Amelia Peabody perfectly. I started with Book 4 (Mummy case) when I found it in a Chirp sale, then quickly looked for Book 1, which I could only find with Barbara Rosenblatt as narrator. While she has perfectly presentable style, the tone is too properly English to catch Peabody’s personality, IMO. I was surprised to learn she’d been chosen to continue with the series (I had assumed O’Malley had replaced her) and that she had such fans. Perhaps it’s one of those cases where who you heard first shaped your image of the character. It’s certainly true that the two have quite a different takes. Count me as Team O’Malley all the wsy though!
