Resumen del Editor

London, 1758. Beatrice Scarlet has returned to London and found work at St Mary Magdalene's Refuge for fallen women. Beatrice enjoys the work and her apothecary skills are much needed. But when 12 girls sent to a factory in Clerkenwell disappear, Beatrice is uneasy. Their would-be benefactor claims they were witches, sacrificed by Satan for his demonic misdeeds. But Beatrice is sure something much darker than witchcraft is at play....

Absolutely Brilliant, and the language...

Graham Masterton, is a masterful and consummate storyteller, and I have been a fan of his for many years. With his descriptions and trueisms of the time period and flawless attention to detail. He brings his characters to life in such a way that you expect them to simply step forth from the pages and play out their preordained roles before your very eyes. Truly sublime.
The language is delicious and again, flawless which the narrator Emma Gregory, did a magnificent job of, richly envoking each character. It made the story all the more gripping and marvelous for her extraordinary work.
I love the Widow Scarlet, thoroughly enjoyed Book1, but I must say, this one was even better. The horrors of life she had already endured before returning to England (Read Book 1), only made the new terrors and mysteries, she must solve all the more intriguing. She is a remarkable character, able to see beyond human limitations to the circumstances that are endured, in a time when human life was worth so little. Without judgement she seeks only to help and heal, and to use her scientific mind to seek justice for those unable to claim it for themselves.
Not to be missed.

Interesting story, too long

Still a great Masterton book, but the first 4-5 hours could have been cut out and it would have been just fine.
