Resumen del Editor

A beguiling novel of revenge, deliverance, and a powerful sisterhood of magic by the Washington Post bestselling author of The Vine Witch and The Glamourist.

Sidra didn’t murder her husband. Yet even a jinni can’t wish away a wrongful imprisonment. Determined to prove her innocence, she returns to her adopted home - a French village renowned for its perfume witches - with her friends Elena and Yvette by her side. Here is where Sidra’s true destiny awaits, but danger also lurks in the village’s narrow lanes.

On her trail is Jamra, another jinni, who’s after more than revenge for the murder of his brother. He also seeks vengeance for the indignities inflicted on jinn by mortals over the centuries. When he learns of an ancient relic capable of unleashing chaos on the world, and that the weapon is in the hands of his murderous sister-in-law, he vows to destroy Sidra to get it.

Relying on a sisterhood of magic, a mysteriously faithful dog, and a second-rate sorcerer, Sidra defends herself using the village’s greatest asset: its perfume. It’s as beguiling a lure as it is a formidable shield. But is it enough for Sidra to protect herself and those she loves from powers yet to be released?

Reseñas de la Crítica

“Jones' standard American accent contrasts with Assadourian’s light Middle Eastern cadence, which hints at the story's ancient mystery, and her tones, which allude to the underlying danger the sisterhood faces. The quest engages the imagination and the narrators increase suspense through wide-ranging emotional phrasings - from seeing the mystical Grand Pere in the forest to women’s whispered thoughts amid an incense burner’s gentle scent and cries of fear and enthusiasm as they call spells.” - Booklist

“Series readers and newcomers alike will be enthralled.” - Publishers Weekly

“Readers will enjoy catching up with the characters they already know. Smith (The Glamourist) does lovely work describing the luscious smells that Sidra works with.” - Library Journal

Wonderful trilogy!

I'll be looking for more from this author; each part was captivating (no pun intended!), and everything tied up so well. It's an unusual story, too, which is always a treat. Great job!

It's unfortunate the series is over.

I really like how all the stories continue from the preceding story while telling a new story. I love the narrating and beautiful descriptions of things in the story.

Worth the wait

I was waiting on this book release for quite some time, as I was sucked into this world quite quickly after The Vine Witch. I love how we ended up knowing more about each of our leading ladies. The ending of this book tied everything up in a neat little bow. Which I loved. I read fantasy for this reason. Alas, this book did have its dragging points and was a bit dry in some spots. But overall, worth the wait and I enjoyed the conclusion to this series. I will definitely read again.

just like it's predecessors

This series left me feeling satisfied. I like how I, the reader, was left in the dark for most events that perspired without the MC noticing. And to have all the loose ends tied up in the last chapter. Though, I had a feeling I knew who the dog was when he was introduced. I always enjoy the little hyperboles and metaphors the author incorporates when a character is being overdramatic, It tends to blend the difference between reality and the imaginative by forcing us to realise that there are witches and sorcerers and the alike. The only gripe I have is that if I was a impatient, angry, and overpowered villain, I wouldn't be to happy to be prolonged as much as he was. At the end I would have made situations a bit more grave.

The story makes scents, I think

I felt that this Macguffiny sigil-bearing-dagger quest story was not as beguiling as the second book. The story swaps the thread motif for a seemingly endless list of whiff bombs, as called for by the grimoure. Their powers are invoked by cutesy rhyming incantations which summon assistance from some Entity from beyond, and then are loaded into fearsome weapons such as perfume bottles and atomizers. In the convoluted attempts to trick each other, the witches/sorcerers/fairies/demons/Jinn have to either destroy or save mankind. What is a mere mortal to do? Not to worry. Humans, though innumerable, are invisible to the story and but a footnote in this tale in the form of their cars and trains. Of utmost importance, apparently, is the dagger quest. At times the story gets sidetracked and seems to brake to a halt, but if the cast casting spells would just shake a leg, the knife would be found.

Great series, fun magic

At first this book felt like another fun small story but turned out to be an excellent conclusion to what I assume is a trilogy. The ties into the first book were unexpected but felt like the fit.
