An unconventional vicar must exorcise the dark past of a remote village haunted by death and disappearances in this explosive and unsettling thriller from the acclaimed author of The Chalk Man.

SOON TO BE AN ORIGINAL SERIES • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY AND MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL

“Hypnotic and horrifying . . . Without doubt Tudor’s best yet, The Burning Girls left me sleeping with the lights on.”Chris Whitaker, New York Times bestselling author of We Begin at the End

A dark history lingers in Chapel Croft. Five hundred years ago, local Protestant martyrs were betrayed—then burned. Thirty years ago, two teenage girls disappeared without a trace. And a few weeks ago, the vicar of the local parish hanged himself in the nave of the church.

Reverend Jack Brooks, a single parent with a fourteen-year-old daughter and a heavy conscience, arrives in the village hoping for a fresh start. Instead, Jack finds a town rife with conspiracies and secrets, and is greeted with a strange welcome package: an exorcism kit and a note that warns, “But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed and hidden that will not be known.”

The more Jack and daughter, Flo, explore the town and get to know its strange denizens, the deeper they are drawn into the age-old rifts, mysteries, and suspicions. And when Flo begins to see specters of girls ablaze, it becomes apparent there are ghosts here that refuse to be laid to rest.

Uncovering the truth can be deadly in a village with a bloody past, where everyone has something to hide and no one trusts an outsider.

This is my second CJ Tudor book. I also listened to The Chalk Man. Both books are spectacular! Written and narrated perfectly in my opinion. Fantastic character building, unpredictable twists left and right, and a beautiful ending in both cases. I can't compliment them enough! If you don't listen to these you're missing out! I'm putting them both on my listen again list which is very short :D! Can't wait to start a third story by this author!

One of my absolute favorite books now!

I really enjoyed the story, especially because I did not see the twists early on, and not because the truth was buried behind a ridiculous red herring. The clues were there, at least if you had seen some of the films referenced.

Excellent twists!

I don't typically write reviews often. Only when I truly despise a story or if I absolutely loved it. This time, it is the latter. The story kept me engaged the whole way through. The pace was good, and the characters interesting enough for you to want to read more. Also, the main character was a bit snippy, which was unexpected from a reverend. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I would highly recommend this book.

Such a great read!

Exactly what I love in a book. Not too heavy, absolute page turner, tons of breadcrumbs but the end still got me. Loved the characters. Only complaint was it was too short, I wanted more!

We are reading this book with my book club, it starts off slow but it keeps you engaged and the plot twist are so good! I have to re reread it !

Spooky, climactic

This was a good read! The Burning Girls kept me guessing throughout and wanting to read just one more chapter. Aside from that…I honestly can’t remember much of the details 😅 I read this book back in July and it’s mostly just the vibes that have stuck with me - creepy old church, small town filled with secrets, and hints of the supernatural - the details have since faded. I think that about sums up my feelings for the book though - good, spooky, and fast paced, just not fantastically memorable.

Spooky and Fast Paced

I enjoyed the narration and the telling of the story. I thought the ending was a bit thrown together and was not particularly satisfying.

Good for 90% of the book

As with all other books from C.J. Tudor the end was shocking. Excellently written.
