Resumen del Editor

Moments before his death following a tragic car accident, Nick whispers warnings to his wife that someone from his past may attempt to harm or even kill her. He urges her to travel to Philadelphia, to his childhood home. "Find James," he insists. It’s the only way out. Mackenzie dismisses her husband’s warnings, assuming his words were a result of blood loss and morphine...until the things he outlined start to come true.

Her search brings her to the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia and face-to-face with a mother-in-law believed to be dead. Together in the same house the two women’s stories spin together, each with an agenda. Cora is desperate to protect secrets from the past. Mackenzie is determined to uncover those very secrets and find the elusive James before time runs out.

A gallery of photographs in the bowels of the house holds clues to generations of abuse, treachery, and possibly murder. Messages hidden in Nick’s childhood Bible within the Epistle of James have Mackenzie racing against time to put the pieces together, unearth the reasons her husband chose to vanish when he was 16 years old, and locate the person mentioned in Nick’s dying breath. When James is finally found, the results are more horrifying than Mackenzie could have ever imagined.

This one didn’t work for me

Maybe if I’d stayed with it to the end I might have liked it better, but I didn’t care for the narration and found the writing uninteresting . Not for me.

Poor narration ruined the book

I purchased this book because I had enjoyed the authors other book, Twist of faith, so much. Unfortunately, the amateurish reading of this book didn’t even qualify as narration—but overacted reading.
The horrible rendering of any male voice and worse reading of women making them sound ridiculous or furious make this narrator a “never listen to” like Tanya Ebey or the awful Scott Brick (have missed on several Harlan Coben books because he is the narrator)
It is hard to tell if this book was better than average. Perhaps if the authors next book is not narrated by this horrible narrator I will try again.

Just plain stupid

What would have made The Book of James better?

A better main character. I mean this woman was just plain stupid. did everything wrong

Would you ever listen to anything by Ellen J. Green again?

Nope

What didn’t you like about Bobbin Beam’s performance?

all the voices sounded the same

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Book of James?

all of them

Any additional comments?

Pointless. The mystery was drowned out by the stupidity of Mackenzie.

Ugh

I’ve finished some pretty bad books, but this one was too awful. The heroine was stupid and the whole mystery was not at all engaging. To make matters worse, the voices of the reader were unintentionally humorous.
