OK story, overacted performance

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It's worth its time if you're into YA fantasy - especially if you're a girl - the world and the magic is just compelling enough, there's some interesting ideas and even though it's brushed over, the lore seems interesting.

It's obvious girly wish-fulfilling. A poor, lonely girl no one understands is suddenly swept away by a beautiful king and discovers she has mighty magical powers... This will probably be great for teen girls, but as a man in his thirties it gets pretty bland and obvious.

Would you recommend The Bird and the Sword to your friends? Why or why not?

I wouldn't recommend it, since none of my friends are 14 year old girls.

What didn’t you like about Trina Nishimura’s performance?

Her range is very limited - almost everyone speaks on the verge of crying. That fits the main character pretty well, but since she only have a couple of voices more (retarded man screaming and irish fellow) the rest of the story ranges from ok to cringy

This book was impossible to stop listening too. Wonderful characters, fantastic story, great voice acting. I will definitely listen again and will definitely listen to more from this author.

Splendid Listen!

I was a little worried about getting this book at first based on some of the reviews. This was an awesome fantasy listen. I couldn't put it down once I started. Well worth the credit.

Very enjoyable

A very nice listen.
It is a mellow story, not much fighting, but a nice love story.

Story is good, performance is not.

The story was delightful. The performance was the most annoying I have heard. It was comparable to being screetched at. The story itself takes amusing turns and would be worth reading.

Omg. The storyline and character developments were amazing! It was gripping and detailed enough to almost see the environment and characters. The narrator made the book come alive in ways I had no idea were possible. I sound like I'm exaggerating but I am not. Imagine Morgan Freeman but as a woman who can do both male and female voices and cry while laughing... that's talent at it's best.

Entranced!

I was skeptical because I tried another by this author (From Sand and Ash) and just couldn't get into it. I'm so happy I gave this one a shot, because it's fantastic!

Narrator:

Trina Nisimura-3 stars- She could have easily been a 4, but somewhere in the 2nd half, her narrating became choppy. The first half was smooth enough to reel me in, though. She has what sounds like a lisp. It may not be, but it's sounds so much like one, it's hard to ignore. Voice acting is great and all, but it's so difficult to follow when a person yells, then whispers. I have to keep readjusting the volume and rewinding to follow. It shouldn't be so drastic. I would love to try other books by this narrator, but only if there isn't a lisp, this is usually a dealbreaker for me since it completely distracts me from the story.

Beautifully written

Not even 1/3 into this beautifully written book & I am already sure that it will be in my top 5 fantasy reads for the year. I highly recommend listening to the audible version because the narrator brings the words to life!

Was this a youth novel?

The narrator always sounded 14 years old and her naivety never changed. Her distrust and tantrums got old. Also it was hard to tell a young male voice from a female even though the king and his brother were big strong men their voices were high. His patriarchy got old too. It was like, enough all ready... lacked the Any Harmon intensity.

Magic, and Poetry, Action and Redemption

1. The narrator was PERFECT. She made Lark come alive as a character for me.
2. The story was amazing. it was like a bedtime fairy tale, with all the drama and tragedy I could want.

1000/10.

I am making this the next book my group reads!
