Resumen del Editor

During the great industrial age, Andrew Carnegie was in a class of his own. Also known as a great steel baron, Carnegie believed in investing in philanthropic causes and the future of mankind. One of Carnegie's most notorious sayings was that any man that dies rich - dies disgraced.

Although born in Scotland, Andrew Carnegie immigrated to the United States with his parents as a young child. He began his climb to the top as a modest errand boy and eventually moved into the steel industry. By the time he was an adult, Carnegie was one of the richest men in the country. Known as a generous man, he spent a great deal of his fortune investing in organizations that aimed to advance social progress and improve conditions for people of all classes. Andrew Carnegie was also intensely interested in world peace and the security of democracy.

First half was great! Second half got borring

First half is about how he got started in the steel industry. Second half just talks about how he gave away all his money. To me, I could have done without the second half as I was reading for business insight.

A Remarkable Life Story

Would you listen to The Autobiography of Andrew Carnegie & The Gospel of Wealth again? Why?

Yes...The entire life of Andrew Carnegie turned out to be quite intriguing. From coming to America and working in a factory to eventually becoming a steel tycoon, and achieving the accomplishments he did in life, to the unselfish acts and legacy he left behind made this book a real pleasure to listen to.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Autobiography of Andrew Carnegie & The Gospel of Wealth?

The fact that he donated much of his wealth towards helping humanity and building libraries in the latter part of his life was simply amazing.

What does David McCallion bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

David McCallion did this book great justice. His Scottish accent added a great touch to the narration. His character voices were also a nice touch, along with a pace that kept your interest the entire way.

A Truely INCREDIBLE Human Being

What made the experience of listening to The Autobiography of Andrew Carnegie & The Gospel of Wealth the most enjoyable?

This was a very enlightening autobiography about Andrew Carnegie which showed what a true philanthropist he was, and what a big heart the man had. It gives great insight of how Carnegie came into his fortune, becoming one of the wealthiest businessmen of his time, but the most intriguing aspect of this book for me was the fact that money and greed didn’t seem to fuel him like it does with most of todays elite. Carnegie gave back out of the goodness of his heart, which shows what his true ambition in life was... caring about humanity rather than growing his wealth.

What does David McCallion bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Hats off to David McCallion, he did a wonderful job going between the standard narration voice and the Scottish accents throughout the book which gave it a great feel.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not a single moment, but the overall life that this man had, and where he came from to what he became, and how he gave back to those he didn't know makes you wish that we had someone like him to look up to in our generation today.

Felt like a disjointed set of short stories thrown together

This book was formed from a bunch of stories gathered from Andrews journals. To me the stories seemed to be thrown together without much thought of a smooth flow. Due to the ways the stories were arranged it did not capture my imagination. Additionally the stories were read just as they were written in the 18 and 1900’s. This provided a dialect that may have been authentic, however it’s not to interesting to listen to.
