A dark academic debut fantasy with an established cult following that reads like The Secret History meets The Umbrella Academy.

The first in an explosive trilogy

The Alexandrian Society, caretakers of lost knowledge from the greatest civilizations of antiquity, are the foremost secret society of magical academicians in the world. Those who earn a place among the Alexandrians will secure a life of wealth, power, and prestige beyond their wildest dreams, and each decade, only the six most uniquely talented magicians are selected to be considered for initiation.

Enter the latest round of six: Libby Rhodes and Nico de Varona, unwilling halves of an unfathomable whole, who exert uncanny control over every element of physicality. Reina Mori, a naturalist, who can intuit the language of life itself. Parisa Kamali, a telepath who can traverse the depths of the subconscious, navigating worlds inside the human mind. Callum Nova, an empath easily mistaken for a manipulative illusionist, who can influence the intimate workings of a person’s inner self. Finally, there is Tristan Caine, who can see through illusions to a new structure of reality—an ability so rare that neither he nor his peers can fully grasp its implications.

When the candidates are recruited by the mysterious Atlas Blakely, they are told they will have one year to qualify for initiation, during which time they will be permitted preliminary access to the Society’s archives and judged based on their contributions to various subjects of impossibility: time and space, luck and thought, life and death. Five, they are told, will be initiated. One will be eliminated. The six potential initiates will fight to survive the next year of their lives, and if they can prove themselves to be the best among their rivals, most of them will.

Most of them.

it has been a long time since I've listened to a ya book that captivated me the way that this book did. only hearing about it from word of mouth I am glad that I took the time to listen to it very different and very unique.

I avoided this book because of the negative reviews, and they have some points. Yes, the characters are pretty unlikable (save my boy Tristan). They’re elitist and self absorbed, but I think that’s intentional. Regardless of intention, though engaging, I had a hard time imagining these characters as people because of their internal and external dialogue. It doesn’t matter much to me whether the world is realistic or not so long as the characters feel real. These characters largely don’t. It’s not bad, but it’s not amazing either. The narration helps a lot. I might have given overall 4 stars, but the ending is kind of a ‘okay… I guess.’ It’s not out of the blue exactly, there’s hints earlier on, but it’s just very different from the rest of the book that it feels very off. It feels like a tv show that hired new writers. But, I wouldn’t say it’s bad. It does offer some engaging mystery and interesting ideas. The execution is pretty heavy handed. I kind of had moments where I was like “yeah the author wants me to believe these guys are geniuses” more than “oh my god, these guys are geniuses!” But you’re in the mood for horny magical elitists, give it a go. It’s not bad.

It’s overall okay to good

Most of the book focuses on character development. The plot doesn’t progress too well and it feels like a missed opportunity with all the potential on the world setting and magical system.

Curiously
