I was so excited to see Marco—really see him. Just get away and be us. But when I ran out front and saw him on the bike, my very first reaction was no.

Which was weird.

Really weird.

I always felt yes when it came to hopping on the back of the bike with Marco. Something felt off. I didn’t know what—but I just knew it did.

I can’t explain what happened next in any way other than by saying that this was always supposed to happen. It was always going to happen. I could not learn my lessons. Marco could not learn his lessons. We needed something drastic....

I knew we weren’t getting out of this. I knew we were going down. I knew that this might be it. Everything felt like it was in slow motion like in the movies—when, just for a few seconds, you can really see everything clearly. It feels like nothing is moving.

I could see him—I could see the guard rail. I could see the train tracks.

The river. The rocks. The road.

I knew—and I was aware that I knew—that this could be the very last moment of my life.
