Resumen del Editor

Forty percent of your actions are unconscious habits. Discover how to control them.

How many times do you feel stressed at work and then involuntarily start walking to the coffee machine to calm your mind with a cup of freshly brewed coffee?

How often do you intend to eat healthier, stress less, engage in more sports, or be more productive...but then you can't stick to it?

You’ve tried different strategies to turn from a couch potato to super athlete or from an apple-polisher to independent leader. Everyone keeps telling you all you need to do is replace a bad habit with a good one, but if it would be that easy, you would be a superhero by now.

Habits are a complex sum of our past, often unintentionally learned behaviors. Experts estimate that 40 percent of our daily actions are unconsciously performed by these habits. Which means you spend 576 minutes or 9.6 hours doing things you are not aware of.

How can you change something if you don´t know how it works and what triggers it? When you have no clue why your car isn’t starting, how can you fix it? Before you can start changing, you need to understand the roots of your bad habits. It sounds more complex than it is.

Once you know what makes your engine run, you can build life-changing habits in as little as 18 days. Small habits can already have a huge return and benefit your physical, mental and emotional health.

This is only a select sample of what you´ll discover in Start Making Your Bed:

  • Healthy habits to maximize your physical well-being and boost your energy in as little as 30 seconds
  • Reasons why the habits you currently perform cause cancer and how to break them
  • An understanding of the magical loop to break addictions and other bad habits
  • The fatal craving traps you probably fall for too often and how to get out of them
  • The three essential components you need to form a lifelong habit
  • Ways how a new toy in your childhood became a growing void for your adulthood desires
  • Reasons why the candy bar won´t stop sneaking up on you if you don´t know an answer to this one question
  • What other´s describe as the number one most impactful change to achieve happiness (hint: It takes less 60 seconds a day)
  • An unexpected YouTube trend that will make you want to clean your room instantly
  • The possible barriers you will face and how to easily combat them
  • And much more...

You don´t need to spend hours in the gym, cleaning up, or meditating. You just need to understand the principle of small habits. These habits don´t require much of your time and can be practiced in the comfort of your own home.

One last question to know if you qualify for this book: Would you rather take $1,000,000 in your bank account right now or a penny that doubles in value over the course of the month? If you take the $1,000,000 right now, this book is not for you. Habits are for people that can think long-term, invest and wait for the big return at the end. Because after just one month, the penny will end up being $10.7 million dollars.

So, start investing in your future and learn how to improve one percent every single day.

Good ideas for life planning

Good ideas for life planning included lots of very specific action steps to take to get a plan in place. The beginning did a nice job of explaining why it is important to have a life plan, that was probably my favorite part of the whole book, it was the most inspiring.

Finding a better balance with habits

I am one who likes habits when they have an immediate benefit to me. In listening to this book, I am realizing that creating smaller habits feeds into larger habits and has a greater reward. Right away, the book challenges the notion that changing habits is a straightforward task and instead acknowledges the complexity of these learned behaviors. One thing I had not really thought about before is how much habits can impact our lives in either a negative or positive way. We all know if it is a bad habit, it has a bad effect on us but have we ever really thought about the impact of how healthy habits can impact our lives?

Chapter 8 was particularly interesting to me as it emphasizes the critical role of setting yourself up in an environment to foster positive change. Understanding the trigger for the change is critical before you try to start implementing anything. The author uses great analogies throughout the book to help the reader/listener understand that the immediate payoff can have damaging effects in the long term so it is worth it to put in the work now to see a greater payer off later.
