Acuff knows the reason why many writers' novels go unfinished - it's the same reason why gyms are filled in the first week of January and empty by the end of the month and why people stop learning a new language once they get past the easy parts. It's not just that people lose momentum or get distracted. People give up on projects when they fail to live up to their own high expectations and decide that if they can't do something perfectly, they won't do it at all. If you're going to finish, you have to kill perfectionism.

We overthink things. We procrastinate. We hold ourselves to impossibly high standards. We fail to make time for what's most important to us. We doubt ourselves. We're afraid of saying no. We never let ourselves cross the finish line. Sometimes we don't even let ourselves cross the starting line. We all have the little voice in the back of our minds reminding us of the risks, the past failures, the potential humiliation, and the loads of fear that come along with chasing our biggest dreams.

Writing fast is the most important skill you can develop as a writer. While it seems hard to hit high word counts, the secrets are easier than you think. In this writer's guide, prolific author M. L. Ronn pulls back the curtain on the process that he uses to write six to eight novels a year. He has kept this pace while juggling responsibilities as a husband, father, manager at a Fortune 100 company, and a law school student. The result is a catalog of over 40 books and counting.

38 essays to kick you into gear!
Last year I read Shut Up and Write and wrote a review which I have included. Earlier this month I had the opportunity to listen to a review copy of the audiobook version and I feel compelled to update my original review with a few additions.
Shut Up and Write struck a chord with me for various reasons. A few years back when I retired for the second time an old friend asked what I was going to do, and I responded I wanted to write stories. Well fast forward 6 years, and none of those stories have been written, lots read, but non written. This book came to my attention at the right time, and as a result of reading it and the encouragement of Mr. Moore, I have begun that journey to fulfill my long-ago stated goal. In truth this is more than a book on writing. This book if applied in almost any circumstance is 38 ways/reasons/techniques for silencing the inner critic/naysayer/fear and just getting on with whatever the goal.
I finished reading Shut Up and Write on November 18, 2021, and by December 31 I had almost 10,000 words of a story complete. Notice I didn’t say I had a 10K word story completed, I had a very rough draft of 10K words, and as if today it still needs edited, however these past 6 months have been spent figuring out how best to tell the story. Some might say it is a case of analysis paralysis.
Listening to Brittany Lee McDonald narrating Shut Up and Write earlier this month has once again given me a metaphorical kick in the pants toward completing the story. I am rapidly becoming a fan of Brittany’s narration; I’m looking forward to experiencing more.

A well-written short read from a good author
Shut Up and Write (Writer's Library), my forty-ninth read from author C. Dennis Moore. A well-written short read on writing. This book is so him, Brittany Lee McDonald's narration added life to the book, I look forward to the next work from him. I received a free Audible copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. As always, I look forward to reading more from this author. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
