The close knit community in San Miguel de Allende Mexico was plagued by a string of sophisticated kidnappings for nearly a decade. When the police finally made an arrest the townspeople were shocked by who was accused of masterminding the criminal enterprise. It's everyone's favorite neighbor and a pillar of the community, Ramon Guerra. Except Ramon isn't who he says he is.

I could not stop listening to this. It is captivating and the delivery is exceptional. You cannot make these types of stories up. Absolutely loved it.

Completely gripping

This was very well thought out. The story was investigated. The plot was interesting and the cultural aspects were well described. The listener receives a short political history of two countries and gets to make their own decisions of guilt or innocence.

This was an excellent account of a series of kidnappings in Mexico and the convoluted history of the man arrested for them. Terrified residents of this well to do area never knew who would be next. Gives some recent Chile, where the suspect grew up along with questions and concerns. The saddest takeaway is that the handling of the cases by local authorities was less than it could’ve been and national attention came when several Americans were kidnapped and some killed. More attention came to the American case, than Mexican citizens in their own country.

A Heatbreaking Investigation into Kidnappings

Very intriguing, true Mexican government corruption, it really is chronic corruption, unsolved cases, feel awfully bad for the Mexican citizens. Liked the book

Dod he do it, did he not, back and forth, fantastically written real life mystery drama.

This story kept me up all the time, Sad, but true the reality is lived in Mexico. The story was well told and the actors made me be aware of every situation in the story.

One of the things I hate about books on an international subject is that the performers are rarely familiar with that language. It happens a lot when dealing with subject matters in Spanish. Karla Souza is Mexican, so it makes all the sense in the world that she performs a book about a Mexican town. Her pronunciation in Spanish is that of a native speaker, and I think that enhances the execution of this audiobook/series. It should always be done—it’s utterly frustrating to have actors mispronouncing crucial information (such as names, places, and local terms). Souza is an excellent actress and her reading was precise; it had the perfect cadence and it seemed respectful to its subject matter.

Karla Souza is 🔥

Very well told and makes several valid points, especially about the lack of local, national and international concerns for the people of Mexico, especially for women.

Insightful

Well written report of what, so sadly, really goes on behind the beauty of Mexico.

SO TRUE!
