What do you do when you have the wrong superpowers?

Magenta's older brother is a superhero. She's starting high school at the school where kids with powers go, including the famous Inscrutable Machine. Except, Magenta's powers are no good for fighting. Her potions are useful, not dangerous. Her other power is just humiliating. What Magenta has plenty of is determination, and she tries fighting a supervillain anyway.

She fails.

But for Magenta, failure is the beginning, not the ending. Suddenly she has a part-time job working for that same supervillain, who doesn't seem very villainous. She spends her afternoons buying mad science from smugglers, copying memories into a magic book, delivering messages to evil lawyers, and always, always, putting on a show. Soon, she's ducking heroes who want to save her from herself, and her best friends, who don't know the sidekick they're chasing is Magenta.

Making sure her parents don't find out is the easy part.

This book was fun. The characters are likeable and the story is interesting. It'll never top the first book in the series, but I think that's because the first book has so much world building to do, whereas this one just has to tell a new story in a familiar setting.
I only have two complaints - the reader goes a bit slowly, so it's best to turn the playback speed up a little, and we still don't get to see my favorite secondary character, Lucy Far; she's explicitly stated to be out of town partway through the book. Bummer.
Still, if you like the Please Don't Tell My Parents universe, you will probably enjoy this edition to it.

A good return to the Please Don't Tell universe

i loved every aspect of this book, except the editing, mistakes by the narrator were left in, pauses seemed unnaturally long and at least once a clip was played twice. other than that it was just as good as the other books in this series, a bit different tone but not in a bad way and i did like that we got new characters.

great story but the editing could use some work

Really loved the story. Found myself not wanting to stop so I could sleep. Would love the next one to see the next adventure and how she’s dragged into it. Trying not to give spoilers!

I am disappointed that the original main character wasn't in this book. i would have liked to hear about how she is dealing with the loss of her powers. instead we are treated to a new main character with unique powers.

The worst part of this audiobook was the narrator. She left in several mistakes and retakes. I hope that Richard gets the original narrator to redo this book.

Somewhat Sad and Somewhat Excited

as fun and fast paced as the first series. highly recommend for anyone that read the first three. note this is a new stand alone series.

I had fun with this title. Though I am new to this series, it was easy to follow along as it seems the characters are all new in this book. The voices and storyline are kooky and strange but made it entertaining!

Totally different and new characters but still an interesting read. There was some getting used to with the new characters and new narration, but overall worth the credit.
Others noted issues with the editing of the narration, but they must have fixed the errors because my copy did not have any problems. Glad they fixed it.

Totally Different from Others in the series

the story falls a bit too close to Bad Penny in generalized outline. but I still loved every moment of it. I sincerely hope Roberts continues to return to this series.

that said, I wish there was more communication on the release of this book. I have subscribed to his newsletter and check in on his blog regularly. both of which seemed to never be updated after saying he was going to make a new book in this world. I found this one was out merely because I went in for reading the original books again.

it was wonderful getting back into this world

A 'knowledge based power' teenage superperson in a super school finds herself working for a supervillain who apparently is maybe not so villainous. This one requires a lot of patience for flights of fantasy but does well at world building. The premise puts 'our heroine' supervillain at odds with her friends/schoolmates/family and their 'heroic' orientation. The clever warping of social norms and expectations is a fun part of PDTMPIWfaS. Somewhat it toys with labels and twists conventions but in a way that might seem superficial because it's labelling villains as villains somewhat arbitrarily then challenging that maybe they are not villainous (there is not a convincing aura of menace or selfishness because we are to relate to the villain rather than see them as villainious). I appreciate the 'mad scientist' tropes and they way the mixed with superhero typicals. I also liked some of it's high school drama stuff that elevated the bigger themes of heroes versus villains and paired well with seeing good or bad in others. There are some bits about family legacy that felt smart too in that the kid is trying to navigate a world she doesn't really understand with generally good intentions but also fearful that it's not enough for her family. The book could have used some editing for pacing at times (it's biting off a lot with everything going on) and I sometimes found my attention wandering. Narration by Penelope Graham is spot on for the character and really helped me get more into the book than I might have from written word alone.

Cleve Social & Moral Irony

I returned this book which is a very rare thing for me to do. I found the story weak and the editing of the narration poor. There are several instances in which edits are not removed; you get to listen to reading errors and emphasis changes that should have been deleted.
Not worth the cost.
