Acerca de esta escucha
This program is read by the author.
From pop culture podcaster and a voice of a generation, Kate Kennedy, a celebration of the millennial zeitgeist
One in a Millennial is an exploration of pop culture, nostalgia, the millennial zeitgeist, and the life lessons learned (for better and for worse) from coming of age as a member of a much-maligned generation.
Kate is a pop culture commentator and host of the popular millennial-focused podcast Be There in Five. Part-funny, part-serious, Kate navigates the complicated nature of celebrating and criticizing the culture that shaped her as a woman, while arguing that great depths can come from surface-level interests.
With her trademark style and vulnerability, One in a Millennial is sharp, hilarious, and heartwarming all at once. She tackles AOL Instant Messenger, purity culture, American Girl Dolls, going out tops, Spice Girl feminism, her feelings about millennial motherhood, and more. Kate’s laugh-out-loud asides and keen observations will have you nodding your head and maybe even tearing up.

Did you know that up to 90% of women experience menstrual abnormalities or pelvic issues in their lifetime? Yet these conditions are overwhelmingly misunderstood, misdiagnosed, or dismissed. The root causes for these issues, such as PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, PMDD, or pelvic floor dysfunction, don’t receive the stream of funding for research and new treatments that other conditions do, despite affecting up to half the population.

Whether looking at intelligence or emotion, cognition or behavior, science has continued to tell us that men and women are fundamentally different. Biologists claim that women are better suited to raising families or are, more gently, uniquely empathetic. Men, on the other hand, continue to be described as excelling at tasks that require logic, spatial reasoning, and motor skills. But a huge wave of research is now revealing an alternative version of what we thought we knew.

Reseñas de la Crítica
“Deliciously nostalgic and brain-tinglingly astute. Kate Kennedy has a Gilmore Girls-snappy voice, Taylor Swift-style emotional relatability, and a witty wisdom all her own. Thanks to this book, I’m actually proud to be in my millennial cringe era.”—Amanda Montell, author of CULTISH and WORDSLUT
"Hilarious, brilliant, and relatable as hell, ONE IN A MILLENNIAL establishes Kate Kennedy as a dazzling new voice for the millennial generation. In every fresh, insightful, and sneakily powerful essay, Kate excavates personal memories and pop culture moments by pinpointing exactly why they were so meaningful and formative. She allows women of all generations to celebrate our surface-level interests and not limit ourselves to the boxes society tries to put us in."–Jenny Mollen, New York Times bestselling author
"Kate Kennedy is a champion of–and among–millennial women, and her debut book reinforces that there is depth to even the seemingly shallowest subjects. Kate has the rare gift of making everything interesting, and every page of this insightful, tender and hilarious collection feels like a late-night conversation with an old friend about things you were sure only you thought about. She is definitely a voice of this generation. I loved every single page of this book, and was devastated to find that, like all good things, it came to an end."–Nora McInerny, author of BAD VIBES ONLY

Amazing book
A friend recommended this to me and immediately started it because I had been in a slow reading period and it sounded easy enough. Boy was I right and wrong all at the same time. This book is full of amazing millennial memorabilia and brought back so many amazing memories of my childhood. But it also hit on extremely important, current problems in the world and how we are all not alone in facing them. Loved this book, and Kate!!

Have you ever stayed on the phone until 5am with your best friend?
Those moments in the 1am-4am when one of you is quietly meditating staring at the ceiling or sky, while the other one is telling a long story or metaphysical idea slowly and hypnotically? That’s what listening to this book felt like to me. I was the one listening and nodding my head and sometimes closing my eyes and letting tears flow down without feeling strange or awkward. I just felt comfortable and connected.

A written yearbook of my life…
This book was very rapidly recommended by one of my best friends (hey, Kristen!) I immediately downloaded and started reading…and what a ride! It really felt like a written yearbook of my life. It was amazing to reminisce while also making connections to some of my relatable insights today as a 40-something “elder” millennial and the struggles we have in our current world. My friend and I had a “pseudo” book club between the two of us, calling at 745 each morning for a week to discuss insights and quotes we found relatable and hilarious. Thank you, Kate, for writing this memoir and walk down memory lane. I can’t wait to read it again (and force all my friends down this path too!)

Incredibly relatable!
This book was absolutely perfect. I laughed. I cried. I felt so understood. I wish I had more time to craft a perfect review, because that is what this book deserves. But I’m going to take advantage of reviewing hopefully early enough for Kate to read it. Kate - I am a younger millennial (a zellenial, if you will), but I related to every single sentiment in this book and I have a feeling that many women will relate to it for generations to come. There are life experiences that I could have never put into words, and you did it so beautifully. I might have officially grown up during a time of early Facebook messenger rather than AIM, but I can relate all the same. This book made me feel proud to just be me - a woman moving through this word and trying my best, all while listening to Taylor swift with my basic Starbucks order in hand. I’m also proud of the little me I once was, and for the many things I have in common with so many wonderful women around me. Thank you for the heart and soul you put into this book. I can’t wait to re listen to it again in the future.

Proud millennial!
Thanks for making me feel proud of my generation. You brought me back to some of my most treasured core memories, which I now feel very compelled to revisit with the friends who were there during those times. And, as a “Beth” named Beth, I sobbed through your acknowledgements just feeling so happy for you! Thank you for capturing all of the “Beth” things about our generation in this book 🥰
