General Stanley McChrystal
Acerca de esta escucha
From the coauthor of New York Times best seller Team of Teams, a practical guide for leaders looking to make their organizations interconnected and unified in the midst of sudden change.
Too often, companies end up with teams stuck in their own silos, pursuing goals and metrics in isolation. Their traditional autocratic structures create stability, scalability, and predictability - but in a world that demands rapid adaptation to a new reality, this traditional model simply doesn’t work.
In Team of Teams, retired four-star General Stanley McChrystal and former Navy SEAL Chris Fussell made the case for a new organizational model combining the agility, adaptability, and cohesion of a small team with the power and resources of a giant organization. Now, in One Mission, Fussell channels all his experiences, both military and corporate, into powerful strategies for unifying isolated and distrustful teams. This practical guide will help leaders in any field implement the Team of Teams approach to tear down their silos improve collaboration, and avoid turf wars. By committing to one higher mission, organizations develop an overall capability that far exceeds the sum of their parts.
From Silicon Valley software giant Intuit to a government agency on the plains of Oklahoma, organizations have used Fussell’s methods to unite their people around a single compelling vision, resulting in superior performance. One Mission will help you follow their example to a more agile and resilient future.

Historia
The retired four-star general and and best-selling author of My Share of the Task shares a powerful new leadership model. Former General Stanley McChrystal held a key position for much of the War on Terror, as head of the Joint Special Operations Command. In Iraq, he found that despite the vastly superior resources, manpower, and training of the US Military, Al Qaeda had an advantage because of its structure as a loose network of small, independent cells. To defeat such an agile enemy, JSOC had to change its focus from efficiency to adaptability.

Retired four-star general Stan McChrystal has lived a life associated with the deadly risks of combat. Why? Because they focus on the probability of something happening instead of the interface by which it can be managed.

Stan McChrystal served for 34 years in the US Army, rising from a second lieutenant in the 82nd Airborne Division to a four-star general, in command of all American and coalition forces in Afghanistan. During those years he worked with countless leaders and pondered an ancient question: "What makes a leader great?" He came to realize that there is no simple answer. McChrystal profiles 13 famous leaders from a wide range of eras and fields - from corporate CEOs to politicians and revolutionaries. He uses their stories to explore how leadership works in practice.

In times of stress, we have a choice: we can retreat further into our isolated silos, or we can commit to "going higher together". When external pressures are mounting, and employees are working from far-flung locations across the globe, says best-selling author Keith Ferrazzi, we can no longer afford to waste time navigating the complex chains of command or bureaucratic bottlenecks present in most companies.

Most of what we know about how ideas spread comes from best-selling authors who give us a compelling picture of a world, in which "influencers" are king, "sticky" ideas "go viral", and good behavior is "nudged" forward. The problem is that the world they describe is a world where information spreads, but beliefs and behaviors stay the same. When it comes to lasting change in what we think or the way we live, the dynamics are different: beliefs and behaviors are not transmitted from person to person in the simple way that a virus is.

Much of what we hear about who gets to the top, and how, is wrong. Those who become chief executives set their sights on the C-suite at an early age. In fact, over 70 percent of the CEOs didn't have designs on the corner office until later in their careers. You must graduate from an elite college. In fact, only seven percent of CEOs in the dataset are Ivy League graduates - and eight percent didn't graduate from college at all. To become a CEO you need a flawless résumé. The reality: 45 percent of CEO candidates had at least one major career blowup.

There is a competitive advantage out there, arguably more powerful than any other. Is it superior strategy? Faster innovation? Smarter employees? No, New York Times best-selling author, Patrick Lencioni, argues that the seminal difference between successful companies and mediocre ones has little to do with what they know and how smart they are and more to do with how healthy they are.

Reseñas de la Crítica
“One Mission sets out the most exciting prospect for re-engineering a twenty-first-century company. For me, this was not a book for bedside reading. I read it upright, taking notes, inspired with thoughts for my own enterprise. Assuming I have the discipline to follow through, these few hours of reading will prove the highest ROI on my time in a dozen years.” (David G. Bradley, chairman of Atlantic Media)
“One Mission is required reading for anyone leading people. Fussell’s vivid account of how a team of teams model turned the tide on the battlefield is both inspiring and instructional in helping leaders to navigate the transition from twentieth-century bureaucracy to twenty-first-century complexity.” (Doug McMillon, president and CEO of Walmart)
“Leaders from all sectors will recognize themselves and their organizations in the pages of One Mission. Fussell is an engaging writer, weaving together stories of his military past with tales of the many businesses that he was worked with. The result is a valuable, practical manual of how to make the necessary changes to become a Team of Teams.” (Anne-Marie Slaughter, president and CEO of New America, author of The Chessboard and the Web)

We've all had experiences with two dramatically different types of leaders. The first type drain intelligence, energy, and capability from the people around them and always need to be the smartest people in the room. These are the idea killers, the energy sappers, the diminishers of talent and commitment. On the other side of the spectrum are leaders who use their intelligence to amplify the smarts and capabilities of the people around them.

Historia
Retired four-star general Stan McChrystal has lived a life associated with the deadly risks of combat. From his first day at West Point, to his years in Afghanistan, to his efforts helping business leaders navigate a global pandemic, McChrystal has seen how individuals and organizations fail to mitigate risk. Why? Because they focus on the probability of something happening instead of the interface by which it can be managed.

Historia
We've all had experiences with two dramatically different types of leaders. The first type drain intelligence, energy, and capability from the people around them and always need to be the smartest people in the room. These are the idea killers, the energy sappers, the diminishers of talent and commitment. On the other side of the spectrum are leaders who use their intelligence to amplify the smarts and capabilities of the people around them.

A wonderful book
A fantastic book that I found to be developmental and maturative for a young man coming of age such as myself. I found this book to be highly relatable and I found great relation with the author. I further highly recommend this book.

Actionable insights for a VUCA world.
Liked this book a lot because it offers pragmatic answers to universal issues. I’d like to see a similar book from the overarching perspective of the technology sector, and not military operations, as I believe the concepts will get deeper acceptance that way.

Essential for any aspiring or failing leader
Chris and team do a great job of breaking down the essentials of the team of teams approach.
I'd love to see a follow up book with some ROI's.
Not because I don't believe the approach, but I think most managers are curious how to argue and pitch the idea.
It will be interesting to see how long it takes companies to realize this methodology is what they actually need to maintain their businesses.

Outstanding!
This follow-up to Team of Teams is its equal and provides a lot of fine grained details of how the concepts can be translated and implemented. Ranks alongside Extreme Ownership for its practicality.

Top Notch Leadership and Change Management in One!
Would you consider the audio edition of One Mission to be better than the print version?
Books read by the author are particularly compelling, in my experience. This was no exception. As I listened, I couldn't help but feel that Chris's intonation and emphasis expanded the material (instead of wondering if the reader is miss-interpreting the material, as I sometime wonder when it is read by a paid voice.)
What other book might you compare One Mission to and why?
The Advantage by Patrick Lencioni, because both provide tools to improve organizational health- the most important aspect of organizational development currently being explored by leadership experts.
What about Chris Fussell and General Stanley McChrystal ’s performance did you like?
Clear, straight forward, and personable in presentation, I felt like I was engaging with each of them as I listened. Really enjoyable.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
The material is tight, and taking time to digest it between listens and after particularly insightful sections was helpful.

Change the lines!
This was a great book as I began my role as a Strategic Director. This is a useful outline on effective ways to reach out of silos and create a great move toward a unified narrative.
