Predictable at best; dangerous at worst

The performance gives an excellent reading, though hearing this reader perform the phone book would have had more unexpected revelations. The story of a woman with a troubled childhood and a serious case of depression, "Once an Atheist" demonstrates the greatest potential harms religion can do: dissuade you from evidence based reasoning and encourage you to treat mental illness with placebos. Had the story presented a more interesting revelation (that community in a time of personal crisis can help one overcome serious mental anguish), it might have earned a higher rating. I was hoping for a compelling argument in favor of belief. What I got was the typical bashing of atheism and a dangerous message about how to respond to a crisis in mental health. I strongly recommend skipping this book.

Exclusively biographical

Don't expect anything remotely apologetic here, since all the content is biographical. The narration is great and the author seems sincere, like usually in this kind of books, but we don't make past subjective and very interpretative experiences. We are left to believe that the only recourse anyone has to alleviate the pains of a very troubled and difficult life is (the very christian...) God The true one, that is... That is obviously not true, and I feel bad that many people see atheist lives that way. "God or death" is a very simplistic way of seeing life and at the risk of troubling a lot of christians out there, so many godless people lead very meaningful lives without this placebo effect of believing that the invisible man in the sky is saving them from their illnesses, or any other calamity. Of course, the author has the total liberty to interpret the "signs" as she wishes and believe what she wants at the end, but that has a very low probability of convincing anyone with (even...) a very basic analytical mind.

One fact that she should NOT believe, though, is that gravity works differently on the moon than on the earth! Really? I'd like you to explain that to me!

Also, excuse any syntax mistake I could have made in this review, since english is only a second language to me...
