Reseñas editoriales

The second installment of the Crown Colonies fantasy series, Of Limited Loyalty, narrated like a wise English grandfather by Peter Batchelor, picks up the action three years after the Crown Colonies of Mystria defeated the evil Tharyngians in an epic battle and have now created a new rule and political order with which to govern themselves.

However, the opposing wants and desires of the recently free can destroy long allegiances and even incite explosive violence from within. And the Colonies still have plenty of enemies to deal with "on the outside".

This story is very much inspired by the Pilgrims and the beginnings of colonial America - but with even more carnage.

Resumen del Editor

In the three years since defeating the Tharyngians at Anvil Lake, The Crown Colonies of Mystria have prospered. Colonists, whether hunting for new land or the Promised Land of prophecy, have pushed beyond the bounds of charters granted by the Queen of Norisle. Some of these new communities have even had the temerity to tell the Crown they are no longer subject to its authorities. To survey the full extent of the western expansion, the Crown has sent Colonel Ian Rathfield to join Nathaniel Woods, Owen Strake, and Kamiskwa on an expedition into the Mystrian interior. They discover a land full of isolated and unique communities, each shaped in accord with the ideals of the founders. Conflicts abound among them, and old enemies show up at the least useful moments. Worse yet, lurking out there is a menace which the Twilight People only know from folklore as the Antedeluvians; and westward penetration stumbles into their lands and awakens them. Alerted to this threat by his men, Prince Vlad petitions the Crown to send troops and supplies to destroy this new and terrifying enemy. The Crown refuses, citing massive debts from the last war. They dismiss Vlad's claims as fantasy, and impose a series of taxes on Mystrian trade to finance their own recovery. Faced with fighting an inhuman foe in a land seething with resentment against the Crown, Vlad must unite the Colonies in a common cause, or preside over their complete destruction.

Excellent story line.

Would you listen to Of Limited Loyalty again? Why?

Possibly. It was a good story and there are moments that I would like to refresh my memory.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mage Hawk. Liked his outlook and coolness on life. There is more to him than meets the eye.

Have you listened to any of Peter Batchelor’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, the first book. He does very well in this role.

Another great read/listen from one of my favorites

Stackpole weaves an intriguing tale, that, unfortunately, because of a publisher bankruptcy leaves the listener wanting more. (But wait, Stackpole has a Paetron account where he posts new materials, and a tease was left for the fans just this week. (I really hope this comment ages well. Michael, finish this saga, please) )

Book one got me hooked on the story. Book two made me care about the characters. My only complaint is that when read, some of the male voices were not differentiated quite enough to hear the differences above the noise of the airplane where I listened.
