Enjoyable story

I gave the performance a 4 because I enjoyed the narration, however, frustrating to listen to as there was IMO no distinction between the characters voices. It was at times confusing to figure out which character was talking. This would be a good book to read not listen to. I really enjoyed the story line.

This book was sooo good. I loved Brady and Gemma and Mike. What a threesome of good guys/girl. Liked the cops Abernathy and Olsen. Falco was funny, bet he never did THAT again. Loved the suspense, drama and murder mystery. Loved the romance and sex, too (it woudn't have been nearly as good without the romance and sex.) Over all a wonderful read.

As to the narrator? She could have tried a little harder to make the men sound a little more manly but at least they didn't sound like women. Could have been better but was still OK.

I wasn't able to get past the first few chapters. The narration was very monotone, no inflection and no distinction between different characters. I couldn’t figure out who was talking unless the author stated (usually after) who was speaking. Made it frustrating to get into the story. The story line did not seem bad. The two main characters (at least as much as I read) did not jump all over each other or instantly fall in love. Initial attraction was there but not harped on and the author didn’t go into much detail about it, which was nice. Will read this on my kindle instead. Again, I only got through the first few chapters.

More mystery than romance but still good

NYSI is more mystery than romance and I prefer more of the latter. But still, I liked the story and enjoyed it and the narration. Kate Udall's narration may be an acquired taste as she's very subdued. Unlike other reviewers, I liked it, particularly because it fit the mood of the book.

Gemma and Brady's story is a typical alpha male hero/heroine in distress story. For the most part, there is little of the cliched misunderstandings that romance writers use - there is one instance of it and it plays a key role in the plot. However, it's believable and not too long lived. There is plenty of depth to the characters, except for Ned (Gemma's on-the-way-to-being-ex-husband), who is written as a total sleaze with zero redeeming qualities. He is rarely explained (e.g., why does he undermine her, make her think they are broke (this is not a big part of the plot, just background, so I'm not spoiling anything), etc.) Gemma, Brady (h/H), Gemma's brother Mike, and Doug Wheeler, are drawn well.

There is a bit of Irish mysticism in the story, with Mike & Gemma (brother/sister) sharing a unique link and with Brady also having a bit of fey to him. This adds to the story, IMO, but may be a bit woo-woo for some. I'd compare it to some of Nora Roberts's books. It's not over the top, just another plot device.

If you're a fan of mystery/romances, this is a good book. I'd suggest you listen to the sample before you buy as some reviewers have said they were unable to listen to Kate Udall. Not sure if I'll listen to this again but I'll probably explore other stories by Cait Donnelly and narrations by Kate Udall.

Well written and excellent narration from Kate Udall, as usual. I'm just sorry this is the only book by Cait Donnelly.

unusural for me not to even finish even the lamiest of books, but couldn't finish this one.
