Avremi Zippel
Avremi Zippel always knew his life would be different. With a commitment to follow in his father's footsteps and serve as the Rabbi in Salt Lake City, he knew his life would defy stereotypes.
However, nothing could prepare him for the truly unexpected twists and turns reality had in store.
Not What I Expected tells the story of a young adult coming to terms with the decade of childhood sexual abuse experienced at the hands of the family caregiver and the decision to pursue a path of healing and embark on a perilous journey of seeking justice....
It is a tale of faith, hope, and belief, both in oneself and in something larger than self. It's a reminder that you can learn to find your voice when you commit to listening to yourself. Ultimately, it's a reminder that the most powerful and fulfilling life you can live is often the one you aren't expecting....

I cried and laughed and felt as if I was living through the drama of the trial along with Avremi and his family.
There are lessons for us all in this beautifully written and narrated book.
Heartbreaking story told with grace and eloquence

Ultimately, everyone's journey includes pain, so hearing about his pain through so many different stages of life with such eloquent and emotional telling, really made me feel seen, like when the beginning of Fatherhood broke him.
His focus on how many good people there are and how the little good things people do, was also a refreshing insight.
I cried a few good times, and laughed too.
my two favorite moments are when he says that "concern for what other people think about you, is a reflection of what you think about yourself" is so powerful. and the letter to his 8 year old self at the end of his impact statement inspired my first song on my upcoming album.
Avremi, when the time comes for someone to consider marrying one of your sons, I would tell them that their father is a modern day Hero.
Thank you for owning your journey. G-d bless you.
Such a moving story. couldn't stop listening

When he finally realizes he was a victim of abuse after years of being manipulated to think that he was at fault, he chooses to turn his life into one with a mission- a mission of inspiration and hope for countless others. The shift he had in the moment it hit him that he needs to come out, even as he was still in such a vulnerable stage, is so powerful. He didn't come out for attention or revenge. He knew the world needed it. And he was so right!
I was also inspired how throughout his journey he chose to turn towards G-d instead of against G-d.
There is also lots of wisdom weaved into the book, such as how to truly care for another person (and how much it meant to him to have those people in his life).
I'm sure this book, with G-d's help, will help bring healing to all survivors of abuse and will help others understand them better.
Really enjoyed reading this!
