Resumen del Editor

Acclaimed author Lilliam Rivera blends a touch of magical realism into a timely story about cultural identity, overcoming trauma, and the power of first love.

Eury comes to the Bronx as a girl haunted. Haunted by losing everything in Hurricane Maria - and by an evil spirit, Ato. She fully expects the tragedy that befell her and her family in Puerto Rico to catch up with her in New York. Yet, for a time, she can almost set this fear aside, because there's this boy....

Pheus is a golden-voiced, bachata-singing charmer, ready to spend the summer on the beach with his friends, serenading his on-again, off-again flame. That changes when he meets Eury. All he wants is to put a smile on her face and fight off her demons. But some dangers are too powerful for even the strongest love, and as the world threatens to tear them apart, Eury and Pheus must fight for each other and their lives.

Featuring contemporary Afro-Latinx characters, this retelling of the Greek myth Orpheus and Eurydice is perfect for fans of Ibi Zoboi's Pride and Daniel José Older's Shadowshaper.

Editorial Review

Orpheus and Eurydice but with a modern Latin twist, Never Look Back is a gorgeous audiobook of love, life, loss and all the rest. Can love conquer the impossibility of the past?
A story of cultural identity, trauma response, and the ever-enduring romance and power of first love, Never Look Back is an enchanting audiobook from the first minute to the last. Los Angeles-based author Lilliam Rivera takes the classic story of Orpheus and Eurydice and funnels it through a modern kaleidoscope of vivid technicolor, blending reality and fantasy with stunning results. Perfectly narrated by Almarie Guerra and Samuel Maria Gomez, Never Look Back takes listeners on a bewitching journey through love, loss, life, and more. Never Look Back is young adult fiction at its best, appealing to listeners of all ages, shapes, and sizes.
The story revolves around the haunted day-to-day existence of Eury, a newcomer to the Bronx following the tragic devastation of Hurricane Maria. New York is a long way from Puerto Rico, but Eury feels trapped by her own despair, not to mention the evil spirit that she can’t shake. Everything changes when Pheus wanders into her life. A celebrated singer with a voice acclaimed and adored in equal measure, Pheus is the breath of fresh air that Eury so desperately needs, but will their love be enough to conquer demons of the past and the unyielding weight of everyday existence?
Lilliam Rivera’s New York Times-approved storytelling and the tremendous chemistry displayed between narrators Almarie Guerra and Samuel Maria Gomez makes Never Look Back a stunning listen, an Orpheus and Eurydice for a new generation that builds on the impressive legacy of the original with contemporary Afro-Latino characters and personality in spades. —Audible Latino Editor.

Compelling & contemporary

This YA narrative from a Nuyorican/Puerto Rican/Latinx New York/Tampa perspectives post Hurricane Maria destigmatizes mental health struggles of its key character as chapters alternate between her and her love interest as they also navigate the fraught terrain of youth culture, family tensions & loyalties, and self determination. A fast-paced, gripping story with a better ending than the Broadway hit Hadestown.
