Resumen del Editor

Something has always been missing from my life. A hole that I could never seem to fill.

When I accidentally turn a coven of witches into nightmares, I find out what that something is.

Magic.

And it turns out, I have a crap load of it. As a latent power awakens deep inside of me, I’m exposed to one of the most powerful and corrupt organizations in the magical world—the Mages’ Guild.

Barely knowing a spell from a few swear words and luck, I won’t be able to evade them alone. And that’s when I meet him. The Rogue Natural. The best and most feared mage in the world.

He’s dangerous, mysterious, and has a vendetta of his own. He is now the only thing between me and magical enslavement.

Great adaptation

I've read the book and listening how Renee Dorian brings to life. She has Penny sounding exactly how I would imagine she would sound like. The cast also did a great job. Keep up the great work. Can't wait to listen to the next book(s).

Good story but not in cast form

Liked the story, but not a fan of the cast reading and corny music and sound affects.

I can't wait for the next one!

I love this series, but I especially love Penny & Regan together. I hope the next graphic audio is available SOON!

devil in the details

You need age in the voice of ageless, give story authenticity. Feels like a kid trying to be his dad. The powerhouses walk through time collecting accents as they blen in and there is none of that in this graphic novel. This time the original is far better than this one. Nailed Penny though.

It's Great!!

DDVN series is one of my favorites and I'm so happy they are doing a dramatized version of each book. I'm about halfway thru and feeling disappointed that the other book's dramatized adaptations haven't been released. Alas, I will just need to relisten to the other books until the other dramatized books come out 😆

Characters that made me smile

While Penny is great as is Emery,, Penny's mom is Fantastic! The actress that portrays her reminds me of "Miss Patty" from my favorite TV show (Not going to use the name of the show but here's a hint: Mother & Daughter who grow up together and an obsessive need for coffee). It's a completely smile worthy story. Worth a listen and a read.

Unlabeled YA…

This is book four in a series. I read (technically, listened to via audible) the first three in the series and pretty much enjoyed them; at least they kept my attention.

But this one…

The writing is jarring, often using the same word redundantly in the very same sentence, among other things…

Another reviewer mentioned her frustration with the MC’s voice actor's delivery being “shrill.” Although she’s not wrong, it’s mainly the author’s construction of the MC (Penny) that’s the problem. The actor’s delivery just exasperates the problem.

Penny is a virginal 24-year-old living at home who routinely spends her free time with her bestie on a grammatical neighborhood watch. Under the cover of darkness, they correct the community’s handwritten signage with a Sharpie… No, I’m not kidding.

Because this isn’t juvenile enough for the author, apparently, Penny routinely performs shrieking pratfalls and (shrill is an apt descriptive here, I admit. Thank you, previous reviewer…) shrilly shrieks cutesy childish word soup in lieu of actual curse words because her mother has forbidden her 24-year-old to swear.

Please view below just a tiny sample of her mawkishly ADORABLE utterances…
——————————————————————————————————
“Turd swallop Donkey Kong!”

“Flinging Monkey Turd!”

“Fish swim, butter scum!”

“Good gravy, Billie Jean!”
——————————————————————————————————

Please hear these in your head, shrilly shrieked for the full effect.

I’m quite sure the author THOUGHT she was crafting a heartwarmingly naive, 80’s style pratfalling Meg Ryan-esque, charmingly inept ditz. For those of you too young to remember, it was a real thing in cinema. Awkward, a bit stupid, and utterly adorable. It was a way to make a female character more accessible to the male viewership, less threatening, passive and pliable—a wounded bird to draw out their protective instincts and remind them of their inherent superiority.

She even gave Penny dollish features, presumably to further increase her childlike mien and prepubescent style innocence. Twenty-four going on 10.

But the effect is cartoonishly silly, neither charming nor amusing, and certainly not remotely realistic.

The voice actor had little to work with in her attempt to bring such a one-dimensional character to life.

In short, (too late for that, eh?), I recommend the first three books in the series, but this one is an odd misfire.

Dramatized audio distracting this time

I’ve listened to the other dramatized audio versions and I’ve been fine, but this time I was totally distracted by the cheesy music during serious moments. Had to return.

Too shrieky

Female lead’s high-pitched shrill voice gets on my nerves. I’ve enjoyed several Graphic Audio recordings, but this one has too much background noise. It gets tiring in combination with all the yelling and screaming.
