The Prodigal Son Mission on Mulberry Bend stands as a refuge for girls who otherwise would have to live by selling the only thing they have of value - themselves. The work being done there so impresses midwife Sarah Brandt that she volunteers to help out however she can - with clothes, with medical assistance, and with the organization of a benefit dinner. And when one of the girls is found dead and refused burial because of her former life, Sarah's passion for justice is aroused. Reluctantly, Sergeant Frank Malloy agrees to look into the death, if only to keep Sarah from endangering herself by pursuing the matter. But Sarah cannot be kept out of the investigation, and, just as Malloy feared, her attempts to find the cause of the unfortunate girl's death put her in deadly danger - from an unexpected source.

Engrossing mystery
As usual, the mystery is excellent. The writing is good, although this installment has a little more over-explaining than the others do. The author and her editor forgot that we readers understand when something is implied. We don’t need things like a look, a word, or an action explained like we’re simpletons. Overlook this, if you can, for a really good mystery.
Sadly, the narrator only knows an few emotional expressions: angry, petulant, and snarky. The whole story is read in exasperation. I try to imagine the true emotions and subtle nuances of the characters during dialog to give them more depth, interest, and relationship growth. But doing that while trying to block out how the narrator voices them is exhausting and detracts from the excellence of the book. I’ll continue to buy these because the mysteries are so good, and I do like the sub stories and family stories.

This is another good mystery about Sarah and Frank Malloy. In this book there is a prostitute turned up dead from a home that helps girls. She looks like Sarah and that shows Frank how much he likes her. He first thought it was her. Sarah as usual goes digging for clues. Frank Mallory has to follow to help and keep her safe. This book held my interest. It's a good simple easy to follow mystery. You don't know who the killer is till the end. Everyone you think it is it turned out it's not. I'll continue with this series. Would be a great TV series!!
I'm hooked on this series! Mrs. Sarah Brandt--Victorian widow and midwife--donates clothes to a mission for wayward young women, only later to be asked by Sergeant Frank Malloy to identify one of them found dead in the New York City park. As Sarah's friend, he recognized her hat and suit on the dead woman. Thus starts the search for the killer.
I loved the twists and turns. Victoria Thompson is a wonderful writer!

So enthralling!
Audible was having a major 85% sale so I snatched up as many of the books I could, up to 7! I can't wait read the next one. Great read, great narrator.

I just love this series!
The background story of Frank and Sarah is what has me hooked. I admit it wasn’t an instant connection as of Book 1, but I have grown to love the characters and I can’t wait to know what happens next in their lives.
Book 5 moved their story along nicely, but I wish it were a little faster!!! Of course the author does have to drag it out a little, we can’t get their ENTIRE story over and done with in one volume – we need a reason to keep coming back for more.
Being the impatient person I am, I want more and I want it NOW! I am diving into Book 6 right away.
