Resumen del Editor

Can Jane Tennison uncover a serial killer?

The fourth in the Sunday Times bestselling Jane Tennison thrillers, MURDER MILE is set in 1979 at the height of the 'Winter of Discontent' when economic chaos has led to widespread strikes across Britain.

Jane Tennison, now a Detective Sergeant, has been posted to Peckham CID, one of London's toughest areas. As the rubbish on the streets begins to pile up, so does the murder count: two bodies in as many days.

There are no suspects and the manner of death is different in each case. The only link between the two victims is the location of the bodies, found within a short distance of each other near Rye Lane in Peckham. Three days later another murder occurs in the same area. Press headlines scream that a serial killer is loose on 'Murder Mile' and that police incompetence is hampering the investigation.

Jane is under immense pressure to catch the killer before they strike again. Working long hours with little sleep, what she uncovers leaves her doubting her own mind.

Narrated by Anna-Louise Plowman (Holby City, Black Sails and Stargate SG1).

Page-Turner!!!

I was completely captivated by this fast-paced, page-turner! The sexism of the past is front and center in this book.

Excellent

I have heard of La Plante but never read but never read her. This is the first book by her I have tried, and it is excellent. The narrator does an excellent job, and the police procedural is detailed and interesting.

Enjoyed it, but...

not as much as other books by this author. Great narrator! Will try another book in this series though.

Amazingly Captivating

This book kept my attention all the way through. I was happy that the main character got her shine in a man dominate workforce. It wasn't filled with description nor gave a back story for every character, which I hate. Great read for simple entertainment.

Well written, BUT

The plot and writing are intelligent and engaging, I listened all the way to the end. However, I have to agree with another reviewer that everything is presented in a negative light - the interactions between the police murder team, Tennison's relationship with her family, to say nothing of the gruesome and gory recount of the several murders that take place. In other words, there aren't many characters here that are consistently likeable and that makes for a rather tiresome listen. Eleven and a half hours of human misery broken only by some slightly sappy and overly sentimental scenes. A bit of humor would have improved this book immensely.

Tennison herself leaves me feeling a bit meh. She seems to become the hero only because of her ability to tolerate other's bad behavior and keep going, and I'm not sure how admirable that really is. Maybe I have come to prefer stories in contemporary settings where women receive more respect and are able to stand up for themselves when they don't. The dynamic of a woman having to prove herself, over and over, to rather ridiculous men is perhaps meant to be inspiring, but I found it to be the opposite.

I won't be continuing with this series.

Volume changes made it impossible to listen to.

Conversations in the book taking place over the telephone resulted in constant volume control up and down. It's too difficult to hear the person slightly altered to demonstrate a telephone connection without turning up the volume and then it's blasting loud as it changes to normal parts of narration. After an hour over several days, I gave up on it.

Had Potential

The book had great potential but quickly spirals into a social justice statement that’s irrelevant in today’s world.

Not worth the read.

I thought I'd Like these more....

I am a huge fan of Lynda la plante and the Jane Tennyson stories so when they started making prequels to the Prime Suspect books I was pretty excited. After reading the first 4, I admit that I'm having a bit of a difficult time. The environment is so unceasingly negative it can be difficult to read the stories. The hatred and backstabbing of the male detectives is so unceasing it just gets depressing. At first I was interested in following Jane's journey but after 4 books, it's pretty clear why she ends up a lonely alcoholic. The actual mysteries are good with tight plots and interesting characters. I prefer the narrator of the 4th book as she wasn't so girlish. I will try 1 more book but I am not sure how much more I want to read about Jane's terrible mistreatment at the hands of the male establishment.
