Fitzwilliam Darcy has spent years guarding a secret—one that could cost him everything.

Resigned to a solitary existence, Darcy has long accepted that love and marriage are luxuries beyond his reach. But when a chance encounter on the Yorkshire moors proves impossible to forget, the life he has so carefully constructed slowly begins to unravel.

Years later, drawn into Hertfordshire society by his friend Charles Bingley, Darcy crosses paths with Miss Elizabeth Bennet—clever, spirited, and unafraid to challenge him at every turn. Yet as his attraction to Elizabeth deepens, so does the fear that winning her affection would mean exposing a truth he has long kept hidden.

Unable to endure the agony of watching Bingley pursue the woman he loves, Darcy flees—but fate has other plans. When unexpected circumstances bring Elizabeth to Pemberley, his restraint is tested like never before.

Torn between duty and desire, Darcy must decide: will he cling to the barriers he has spent a lifetime building, or risk everything for the one woman he cannot forget?

This variation has some of the best dialogue between characters in any of the 200+ PP variations that I've read! This book is the perfect story of watching a relationship grow through real-life struggles, it is not one of those books where ODC meets, they fall instantly in love for no reason and then move on. It's also not angsty for no reason, I'm not a fan of angsty stories, I always feel like I want to scream - just ask a question or just open your eyes! This one has plenty of tension in it, but the author builds the tension beautifully. She uses rude family members, unrecognized pride, honest misunderstanding, etc. that are written realistically and then talked through realistically. You are able to experience real growth and evolving love between ODC.

It goes without saying that SZ did an amazing job, the narration is fantastic. I highly recommend this story if you enjoy really honest, deep dialogue in your PP variation stories.

What took me so long to listen to this

I read the book and loved it. With beautiful narration by Stevie Zimmerman it made it beautifully all over again for me.

The beginning is so enchanting with Elizabeth and Darcy meeting in Yorkshire while she was traveling with her aunt and uncle. We don’t find out why Darcy was there until much later.

Darcy has a secret that he is keeping by stating he will never marry. This causes rumors and false assumptions about why. He’s attracted to Elizabeth after finding her again in Meryton. Charles being his puppyish self is attracted to Lizzy AND Jane. And Darcy’s comment to Bingley about this being ‘don’t raise her hopes and expectations’ to mean ‘go for it, pursue Elizabeth.’ Good grief. And he does. It’s a friendly relationship but not love. Meanwhile Jane is suffering in elegant quietness.

Eventually big changes occur under dangerous circumstances. And Darcy still refuses to acknowledge his love and goes on stand on marriage. Yes, angsty.

The happily ever after is hard won but worth the wait. The right hero for the right heroine happens for three of our favorite dear girls.

It’s a great story. Beautiful writing. Highly recommended.

Angst, but not just for the sake of angst.

This story was quite special. I won’t reveal why. But you understand mr Darcy’s point further into the book. It was a good read and listening to Stevie Zimmerman was a pleasure. Great Jaff

Good story

An early meeting for our dear couple that is nearly love at first sight, but without exchanging details of who they are, leads to years of pining before they meet again when Bingley is pursuing Elizabeth in London prior to taking Netherfield. Darcy is unwilling to pursue Elizabeth for reasons that remain a mystery, and Elizabeth is left to ponder his character as he puzzles her exceedingly.

The story stays very close to Darcy and Elizabeth while they struggle through their personal baggage. This is an excellent Darcy and Elizabeth centered story that is beautifully written, well paced, presents a unique obstacle for Darcy, and delivers a satisfying HEA that allows Elizabeth's inherent loyalty to shine.

Stevie Zimmerman provides excellent narration, as usual.

Bingeworthy

I love how Elizabeth & Darcy meet when she’s barely 16, starting the story away from Longbourn and not a repeat of the Assembly fiasco. This is a sweet yet tormenting journey for the couple with a wonderful HEA

Beautiful Pride & Prejudice Variation that will have you wishing for more!
