Reseñas editoriales

Gregory Maguire is best known for writing Wicked, which inspired the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. He also spent time in a Catholic orphanage in his youth, thus he has firsthand knowledge of the setting of Missing Sisters. In this young adult novel, Maguire examines the less-than-charmed life of Alice, a late 1960's orphan with disabilities who loses the companionship of Sister Vincent de Paul, the one person who seems to understand her.

Angela Goethals brings her wealth of experience as a young adult audiobook narrator - as well as an accomplished film and television actress - to the narration. At times touching and at others humorous, Goethals' voice embodies the full spectrum of emotion required of a tragic tale turned triumphant.

Resumen del Editor

Alice's life is about to change. She's a skinny orphan. She's never been able to hear too well. And she can't speak too well, either. The only person who seems to care for her - one of the nuns at the orphanage - gets taken away from Alice in a freak accident. And then one day somebody calls Alice by the wrong name. Miami, she says. Miami Shaw. Miami Shaw, who may be Alice's twin sister. Who lives only a few miles away. Who has what Alice has always dreamed of - a whole wonderful family. But is there a place in that family for Alice?

From best-selling author Gregory Maguire comes a funny, heartrending story of the strength of sisterhood and the struggle to find a family of one's own.

A Gentle Breeze takes us back

This book took me on a quiet and unexceptional visit to my own childhood. To a community and time I knew intimately, where everyone had a catholic parish affiliation and upbringing, where we all new the same prayers and relied on them to get us out of trouble, where 12 year olds were still children and parents pulling a car over to spank children was a threat that counted. A life we were all familiar with that had rules and guidelines. It was a life where we were safe from all the scary things we now find in books and on the news, but it was also a real world without easy answers; where dreams didn't come true and where life was controlled by grown ups and rules we never understood.
A story from the past that might only speak to children from that past - but as I am one myself, it was a relaxing read. I wish we could raise children in that world today, but it is a long time gone. I think a lot of us miss it.

Overall a good story

this is a good story with a decent narrator. Following Alice in finding her twin sister and a family. This is a short story without much action or suspense. But nice for a casual listen.

Nothing ever happens

This book feels like a slow beginning of a story that could go somewhere but it never does. Nothing really ever happens in this book the characters don't really grow or endure anything and it ends with a new person showing up and deciding to wrap things up in a nice bow. I don't understand how anyone would think this is worth their time.
