Author’s note: This is the first in a new series set in the same universe as my Heartstrikers books, but you don’t need to have heard those stories to enjoy this one. Sibyl

I loved this story. It was fast paced and humorous. It had lots of action and twists. The narration was excellent besides that every now and then Sibyl got a little shriek-ish and super high pitched for me personally. Other than that it was highly enjoyable and I can’t wait for the next one.

A Worldbuilding Delight

Opal Yong-ae, a graduate-mage whose spells backfire more often than work, owes the wrong people. She has to find money fast, so she becomes a cleaner, a person who bids on and then empties out foreclosed apartments. The job’s like Storage Wars with magic in the mix. In the past, Opal’s landed lucrative digs; however, in recent months her luck has changed. It’s like she’s cursed. Her most recent bid lands her a sub-basement apartment along with its last tenant—a dead wizard. The mysterious spell-working he’s left behind is different, and possibly priceless. Trouble is the esoteric magic caused his death and will likely take Opal’s life as well. Not that it will explode or anything, but a bunch of bad corporations-slash-villains want it. She should turn it over to city authorities, but she needs the money, so Opal teams up with a spunky AI, and Nickola Kos, a rival cleaner working off his own troubled past. Together, they dodge bullets, cyber-enhanced mercenaries, crackpot wizards, and over-controlling dragons in the Detroit Free Zone, which readers can think of a cyberpunk Wild West with magic, spirits and fantastic creatures.

I loved how complex the characters were, and the crazy twists the plot took, but my favorite part of this story was the world building. I bought this book on through an Audible sale and it was so good, I paid full price for the sequel.

If you like urban fantasy, I’m betting you’ll like this book as much as I did.

Sucks You In

Great story line that sucks you in, there were a couple slow parts but it was worth the wait.

Cyberpunk plus magic. Great narrator.

Fantastic prose. The author's narrative voice adds the spark of life to this dystopic, cyberpunk world. While the book's not openly comedic, the kookiness of the setting adds a certain humor to the story.

Sympathetic main character. Opal is a mage who's down on her luck, forced to work the dirty job of a cleaner of abandoned apartments. She's doing her best to pay off her student loans, trying to stay one step ahead of her despicable loan-shark father. She has a vibrant personality which sings off the pages.

Good side characters. Opal's AI bff is a good 'only sane man' character, while Opal's cyborg partner is a good straight man. The super-cyborg lady was particularly droll.

Overall high level of polish.

I listened to the audiobook, and the Emily's voice added a good amount of depth to the story and characters. It's my second book narrated by her and I am very satisfied. Highly recommend.

captivating! I was enthralled!

I'm doing some particularly mundane tasks at work and this is the only thing that got me through my day! definitely worth it! the narrator was perfect at capturing the voices and emotions of the characters. and the book was well written! some slow parts for dialogue that leave you rolling your eyes slightly, but that's a minor complaint.

Loved!!!

Really good storyline. Fast paced and the characters are fabulous!!! This is the first book I have read by Rachel Aaron but as soon as I was finished I bought the second one in this series. Even though the theme is about young adults it is suitable for young teens. (I am a Young 56!)There is no bad language that I remember and absolutely no explicit s_ _. Such a refreshing listen. The narrator is so good you forget it's a book and you feel like you are part of the action. The characters come to life through her voice and it is easy to imagine what they look like. I will be checking out her Nice Dragons series!

I'll probably check out her other books.

This book got me interested in the universe of the DMZ. I'll probably look for more.
