Resumen del Editor

Born in the slums of Five Points, Emmett Cavanaugh climbed his way to the top of a booming steel empire and now holds court in an opulent Fifth Avenue mansion. His rise in stations, however, has done little to elevate his taste in women. He loathes the city's "high society" types, but a rebellious and beautiful blue-blood just might change all that.

Elizabeth Sloane's mind is filled with more than the latest parlor room gossip. Lizzie can play the Stock Exchange as deftly as New York's most accomplished brokers - but she needs a man to put her skills to use. Emmett reluctantly agrees when the stunning socialite asks him to back her trades and split the profits. But love and business make strange bedfellows, and as their fragile partnership begins to crack, they'll discover a passion more frenzied than the trading room floor....

Narrator ruined this

I hate to trash a woman’s work but she needs to learn voice acting. The characters sounded so much alike I lost track of who was speaking. On the occasion she did adopt another accent it lingered onto the next character. Multiple mispronounced words “inscrooshable?” The story is pretty good, decent plot made into an actual struggle to listen to.

Narrator was not the best

I have enjoyed other books by Ms. Shupe. I think I would have liked this one better with a different narrator.

Read it... skip the audio version

This is a historical romance set in New York during the early 1900’s. The male lead, Emmet Cavanaugh is a wealthy steel magnate, but he is self made. He was born in the slums of NYC, and has clawed his way to the top. Our heroine is from a “Knickerbocker” family. She is high society, expected to host parties, go to the opera, etc. She is NOT to be working. Unfortunately for her brother/guardian, Elizabeth is brilliant and determined to open her own investment company. But a woman cannot deal openly on the Stock Exchange, so she needs a wealthy male to partner with. Emmet is her last hope.
Of course, pleasure mixes with business, and the course of true love runs bumpy indeed.
This story is unique for the time period as the heroine is quite the feminist. And I don’t believe that men in the early 1900’s would trust their investments to a woman. Heck... they have problems with it now! But if you can suspend your disbelief, then the story is entertaining, with the opposites attract theme running throughout.
I have no problem with the story or the book. The problem is the audio version. RUN AWAY from anything narrated by Amy Melissa Bentley.
Her narration totally ruined this book.

Fantastic Story-Horrible Narration

The narration is atrocious, but please don't let that stop you from enjoying this fantastic story! Joanna Shupe is one of my favorite authors and never disappoints. Her romances are intriguing, passionate and touching. These two characters, Emmet and Lizzie are wonderful. Lizzie is a one of a kind heroine, she is smart and brave and is willing to challenge the rules of 1880's New York to start her own business. Emmet is a self made man who is smart enough to see a gem when she walks into his office.

Bad Narrator

I love everything by Joanna Shupe but the narrator was not great at all. I’m really glad I read Magnate first to be able to enjoy it instead of the audiobook being my first experience with the story. Skip this audiobook and read the ebook.

19th century???

Hard to get into this story because the narrator has no sense of diction or anything to distinguish her one tone of voice. She could have been reading a soup can rather than a novel supposedly set in 1800s.

Sad!

Narrator ruined it for me

This narrator sounded like she was reading a text she'd never seen before. The story itself is only average. The narrator is so slow and halting that I listened at 1.25 - 1.3 speed. With a good narrator, I would have given it an overall 3 stars.

Worst Narrator Ever.

The narration was so bad it detracted from the story. Or perhaps someone needed to coach the narrator on how to pronounce certain words - "Wagner" and "tighten" (there are two ts) come to mind. Not as good as the Regency books.

Enjoyable Story Sunk by Awful Narrator

There are exceptional narrators who infuse humor, anguish, and variations in tone and delivery....this narrator isn't one of them, which is unfortunate to the author and her story. The poor reading detracts, making the writing sound more stilted and disjointed than it actually is when reading the book to one's self. The overall poor rating is due to narration only. Shupe writes of motivated, determined women and deserves high quality narrators on par with Kate Reading.

OK story, Wooden Performance

I've enjoyed some of Joanna Shupe's other books but the very stiff narration of this book really diminished the story. I'm not sure whether I would have liked the story much better with livelier narration though. Emmett was kind of horrible and I don't think Elizabeth was as strong-minded as she was made out to be.

If this hadn't been recorded in 2016, I would have thought this was AI narration. I understand that dialogue in this time period was very formal, but that doesn't mean that the rest of the narration or dialogue in private, heated moments has to be emotionless. Also pauses for scene changes and variations in character voices is very much appreciated and expected by the listener.
