Samantha Allen, award-winning journalist and author of Real Queer America, delivers an intimate look at the unexpectedly hilarious moments of her gender transition.

In this poignant audio piece, Samantha Allen takes listeners along for the wild ride of her own transition: The good, the bad, but mostly, the funny. Because once she began this life-changing journey in earnest, Samantha realized that while the emotional trials of gender dysphoria and self-discovery could be harrowing, there were so many laugh-out-loud moments along this winding road.

Think about it: While her 20- and 30-something peers were settling into the people they were going to be for the rest of their lives, Samantha was going through puberty all over again, taking the whole womanhood thing step by glamorous step - from learning the differences between men’s and women’s public restrooms to figuring out how to take off a bra without taking her shirt off first. Recognizing these moments of humor brought her joy in times she needed it most - and sharing them, she learned, could be revelatory.

Part deeply personal memoir, part comedic adventure, and part insightful exploration of how gender informs the ways we see the world, M to (WT)F is a delightful listen that proves how powerful it can be to find humor in hardship.

Dear Listener,

Why did I write M to (WT)F?
"I’ve read (and written) transgender memoirs and found that there has been a dearth of really truly funny autobiographical works. This is in part because we’ve had to make sober pleas for people to take our humanity seriously, but I think we’re arriving at a point where we can afford to laugh at ourselves a little publicly, inviting others to laugh with us so long as they don’t dehumanize us. I set out to write a trans memoir that would be embarrassing, even humiliating, but hopefully amusing." – Samantha Allen, creator and performer of M to (WT)F

I didn’t know who Samantha Allen was before I started this book. Now, I will never forget her or her witty, elegant writing style, her keen insights into the human condition—or her compassion for both trans & cisgendered people. She is kindness personified, but with a little hint of “don’t cross this line” boundary-setting that makes her story a as much about learning and teaching respect, as it is about transitioning.

I laughed. I cried. I mostly laughed. She is hysterical but also very vulnerable. I loved this book!

So many people feel SO strongly about what is "right and wrong" [typically in the religious sense] but I've come to realize [humbly] that just because this isn't my struggle, doesn't make it less real.

My heart goes out to all who feel they can't be their true selves, especially because of their family's lack of acceptance.

Not my issue, but doesn't mean it isn't true....

I’m trans too and it’s really good for me to get a perspective from someone else and what they’re journey was/is like. Especially someone whose been transitioning longer than me so I can know what to expect and prepare for it. Also the humor really helped because often trans memoirs can be...a bit much. Those sentimental perspectives are important but it often feels like they’re to make cis people sympathizes with us rather than it just tell our story in the way that it makes the most sense for us to tell it in.

It’s so good to read someone else’s journey
