Resumen del Editor

Detective Inspector John Rebus is not a man easily intimidated, so when political heavyweights start to lean on the dour, moralistic Edinburgh detective to stop an investigation, Rebus doggedly digs in and follows the case as it moves from embezzlement to murder and finally to conspiracy at the highest level of government.

Another good book in the series

interesting plot about corruption and trying to fight it in high places in government, romantic issues, family issues and general life problems. Is ultimately realizing that we're all alone in this life and trying to stay true to your own self. It'll be interesting to see where this goes next

It's Samuel GiIles again

Rankin and Rebus really start making a great series by the time they find their way into this installment (book 7); however, this is still, I think, Samuel Gilles narrating. The man is a very competent narrator, but he does not seem to be the voice of Rebus, especially as the Rebus character grows more complex in the course of the series. Also, he doesn't get the tone (vocal or literary) of the the story right, to my ears. Unfortunately most of the unabridged Rebus novels on Audible are narrated by Gilles. They'd be a much better listen if James Macpherson (or almost anyone else) was narrating! I'd never read Rankin but will listen to everything Audible's got, so I'll settle for Gilles because Rankin's Rebus et. al. still makes better than average listening entertainment-- unabridged (I found the couple of abridgements I tried to hear Macpherson narrate very choppy editions).

And - becasue I listened to Rankin's Exit Music (Rebus' last) from iTunes rather than Audible due to Cdn$ difference - and I can't recommend that book on its proper page -- Can I just throw in here that Exit Music is a 5 star conclusion to this great series (and it's not Samuel Gilles, either).

The Inspector Rebus character.

This novel had an excellent story of corporate greed and as usual, John Rebus delivered.

Where's the last chapter? Ch 42 got cut off!

I know this one is a free audiobook for members, at least here in the US, and rightfully so. THERE'S NO LAST CHAPTER! How it made it past quality control is beyond me. Reminds me of James Caan in Elf not caring about the children's book's last pages. Plus, I've had a hard time distinguishing characters, since that's the style of the writing, to not include who's saying what to whom. Granted, it works on paper. And the other issue, the narrator doesn't do tone changes, at least only rarely. Gets me lost on characters in the dialog. I suppose I should see if it's available free on kindle so I can complete it properly. I shouldn't have to. Anyway, interesting book nonetheless. Just beware of the shortcomings of this audiobook. 😕

Narrator got in the way

I love Ian Rankin and am a devout anglophile. But this guy (it's NOT Cynthia Darlow, by the way) somehow obstructed the narrative.

Last chapter of book was deleted.... Chapter 42

Book content and plot is good. However, I was very disappointed to find that the last chapter (42) (found in the kindle novel) was deleted in the audible version. Indeed, it has important facts = rebus cuts a deal with the Sec of State - Gunner is not made Chief Constable... he is transferred. Rebus turns down theIThe Chief Inspector's job and makes a deal so that it goes to Flower. The last chapter is important to set the tone and tenor for Rebus in future books and to develop his character. Sad, that the narration was cut short... still in all, I enjoyed the book. The narrator was fine, others in the series are better, but his style was perfectly fine.
