Resumen del Editor

As the world enters a new century, three teenagers forge a future for themselves on the wild Texas grasslands: Gideon Fry, torn between going his way and following his father's footsteps; Johnny McCloud, whose restless spirit finds its solace traversing an open range; and Molly Taylor, the woman they both love. Rugged, bold and volatile, the three of them come of age in this tender and intimate novel of the heart.

Not at all what I was looking for!

I thought this would be a rowdy Western story. I was driving from Northern Montana to Rifle Colorado and wanted a rowdy Western to listen to. It wasn’t! I loved it anyway! Great story! Great writer!

Slow Starter: Don’t Give Up

Great story but it took some time to get into it. Get’s much better in Nook 2. Worth the wait.

The second best work of McMutry

A story about three friends (2 males and 1 female) who grew up together in Texas, in the early to mid 1900’s. A platonic / romantic relationship between the three exists, similar, but not precisely like Lonesome Dove. I would have liked to have seen it as a movie.
The story starts when the 3 are at a young age, perhaps single digit age, and ends at the death of one of the principal characters. It is a story of a life long friendship between the three.
Personally I enjoyed the story because of its relationships between the characters. It gave me a knowledge of how something can mean nothing and nothing can mean something.

A Poignant Look Back in Time

I generally like to read books more than listen to them, but the narration in this one was superb. The three way relationship between the characters was deep and at times made me sad and many other times made me laugh out loud. Again, the narration was so good I could vision the characters clearly, particularly the interactions between Gid and Johnny.

In a way, Gid and Johnny's cowboy characters reminded me of the relationship between Gus and Call in Lonesome Dove, with Gid being a serious hard working, principled man, and Johnny looking for a simple, fun loving way to go. Molly, the love interest of both throughout the decades was hard to figure, and a bit unbelievable at times. However, she was the glue that bound them all together.

If you're looking for an exciting, fast moving edge of your chair read, this isn't it. This is essentially a slow look back in time of a way of life in west Texas and the people who lived it, spanning 5+ decades from the late 1800's to the mid 1900's.

I've read. almost all of McMurtry's books, not all of them are great but Lonesome Dove stands alone as my most favorite books. I will sadly miss him as one of my go to authors for deep relationship books.

Tied for the best

Great story well told. I've listened to and liked many audiobooks and this was as satisfying and pleasant as any, and more than most.

Live life

I really liked this book. It really reminded me of my father and made me not want to waste any time on people who don't really care about you.

Everything about being a cowboy

It's been too long in reading the cowboy stories and no one does it better....I laughed and cried and am the better for reading.

One of the best...

The story itself is beautiful. Balanced between Gid, Molly, and Johnny. And the narrators perfect!! Good ol' Cowboys from North Texas whose narration matches the mood and strength of the story.
