A story of courage, perseverance, and patriotism behind the 75th Army Rangers’ rescue mission following one of the deadliest Special Operations incidents in Afghanistan - a grueling search for 12 Navy SEAL casualties and eight downed Night Stalkers - but just one lone survivor.

On June 28, 2005, a four-man Navy SEAL reconnaissance team under Operation Red Wings was ambushed in Northeastern Afghanistan - as depicted in the book and film Lone Survivor. A quick reaction force was dispatched to assist them. Turbine 33, carrying eight Navy SEALs and eight members of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade, bringing the dual-rotor chinook careening toward the rugged peak of Sawtalo Sar.

The result was the deadliest single incident in Afghanistan Special Operations at the time.

Commanders, unwilling to let this disaster get any worse, quickly called on the largest element of the secretive Joint Special Operations Command, the 75th Ranger Regiment. The rescue mission: Operation Red Wings II.

Tony Brooks, then a newly minted Army Ranger, tells a firsthand account of the daring recovery of Turbine 33 and the subsequent search for the remaining compromised Navy SEAL reconnaissance team - one of whom was Marcus Luttrell, the lone survivor. The Rangers would need to overcome lack of intelligence assessment, treacherous terrain, violent weather, and an enemy that was born and raised to fight.

Like his fellow Rangers, Tony Brooks lived - and many died - by the axiom, “Leave No Man Behind”. His account is the first to tell the story that other books and films have left out, one of courage, skill, and perseverance in overcoming overwhelming odds to accomplish a mission to bring every American soldier home.

I enjoyed the book it's just not what I expected. I expected his team were the ones that stumbled across Marcus luttrell and personally he would write something along the lines of "I assisted in carrying him out" that's not what I got at all but I have over 800 books in my audible library and I loved the psychology that went into this book. the last 30 minutes of the book by itself makes the entire book worth listening to. more people need to be able to look past the pumpkin and see the soldier or at the very least see the chasm that's opening up between civilian and military troops and recognize that they as the civilian have the ability to reduce the PTSD on our troops simply by building Bridges with the veterans instead of building walls and recognizing that the veterans dark humor are Shields against sadness and a psychological breakdown.

his standpoint on the belief that the chasm between civilians and veterans is what can catalyzes PTSD and his views about how we should change that deserves a book by itself.

Thank You for your service Ranger Brooks

I loved this book. It respectfully renders the account of recovering the 16 men who perished from an enemy RPG that shot down their rescue helicopter… these men were trying to save the 4 Navy Seals under fire in Afghanistan in 2005. Emotional, poignant, inspirational, and full of heart. Salute to Dr Tony Brooks for writing this book.

Emotional and Thrilling Story of Heroism

I've listened to a few books about this incident. The story is great, however, while the narrator speaks perfectly well and isn't boring, it honestly sounds like he's just mailing it in. The story is full of just one saying after another, one cliche in the phrasing after another. and the narrator sounds like he's just reading it, and not even making any effort whatsoever to actually sound like the author at all. oh well!

One of the best

Nothing against the man, but the voice actor sounds like a sarcastic business man from family guy or rick and morty trying to sell the main character on a back ended deal. Doesn’t fit. Writer and story are both quite compelling and brutally honest.

Chris Abel doesn’t fit

Find-out more details about op red wings after reading “Run to the Sound of Guns” which tells a different story than “Lone Survivor” from the Rangers who found Luttrell and the bodies. Anyway, it wasn’t bad as a memoir; good story arc. Also enjoyed the narrator.

Love this book, I couldn’t wait to hear what happened next. I like hearing everything comes together in a book like this, we the civilians don’t ever hear about the parts leading up to missions like these.

Great Book

Everything about the book, from start to finish, kept my attention. There was a little of something for everyone, and it was told from an interesting viewpoint. My family and teenage kids all loved it.
