WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU LIED?

The first lie: MONSTERS DON’T EXIST.

When the body of a man is discovered in the Boston Common, Martina finds herself entering a horrific nightmare. She discovers evidence of the unimaginable: the resurgence of ancient methods of persecution being carried out by a Puritan-indoctrinated serial killer who believes the devil walks among us.

The second lie: YOU WOULD KNOW A MONSTER IF YOU SAW ONE.

After the first victim is dismissed as gang-related, Martina fears there is more to the murder than meets the eye. Her instincts are soon proven correct when another victim is found, her body displayed in the same gruesome manner. But Boston has dark secrets of its own. Now, the threads of the past are unraveling once again as history repeats the sins of our fathers. A time when religion reigned and the word of God was the ultimate persecutor.

The third lie: YOU CAN SAVE EVERYONE.

Just as Martina and her partner, Neil, discover the dark rituals have a link to the past, the tables are turned, and they are pitted against time to stop the "Wingmaker" before he strikes again. Martina’s faith will be tested as she fights her own demons and more bodies continue to mount. Can she stop the killer, or has the next victim already taken flight?

A-I voice. Too bad publishers can’t go through and correct mispronunciations. The story was really good and kept your interest. I felt the ending was kind of cut off. But worth the read.

Great suspense story

It is really hard to listen to this book using Virtual Voice. The chapter headings are in Roman Numerals. Virtual Voice does not recognize these and reads them out as C-H-A-P-X-X-I-V. The author also uses AAVE (?) for a couple of characters, which Virtual Voice just sounds wrong. I don't know how else to say it. I understand what the author said but it did not flow.

Virtual Voice Does Not Work with this Book

I'm rarely surprised by plot points but this author had me hooked in the whole time! Keep writing. I look forward to more from you.

The character development added depth to the story with history and biblical references threaded throughout. I hope I can sleep tonight!

This is a note for Audible about virtual voice. There are still knowledge gaps I'm the program such as Roman Numerals.

For the author it would be better with virtual voice narration to label with "chapter 22" to avoid torturing the listener with confusing. reads of the titles and Bible quotes.

I commend your writing of the classic Massachusetts accent. Ironically the narration was able too portray the accent with your excellent writing. I'm off to hear your other title.

Plot Twists Galore

Birgitte Märgen skillfully cites scripture from the Geneva Bible and weaves in stories from the Salem witch trials, bridging present-day crimes with those of the past and offering rich context for the ritualistic killings that echo Puritan doctrine.

If you enjoy fast-paced thrillers, police procedurals, and historical crime, I highly recommend checking this one out.

The narration almost ruined this for me. I understand the economic benefits of using virtual voices, but this was not the book for it! Each chapter starts with an abbreviation for the word "chapter," followed by a Roman numeral. It’s like someone just spitting out random letters of the alphabet. The Bostonian accent was incredibly hard to follow—at least, I assume that’s what it was. I’d much rather pay for an audiobook with a narrator who enhances the story and brings it to life.

Great story, awful narration!

What a crazy roller coaster of a read! When you think you have the code cracked, BAM! a twist throws you in a different direction. I really enjoyed this psychological thriller/mystery. Definitely has some sinister elements to it. (If you don’t like or can’t handle descriptions of bodies being muti1ated, this isn’t for you.) The story was well put together with great character development. This rolled through my head like a movie taking place. My first book from this author and won’t be my last!
-historical religious indoctrination
-gruesome d3aths
-chilling details
-satanic beliefs
-banter between detectives
