This is the second, revised and expanded edition. The first edition was published under the slightly longer title "How to Take Smart Notes. One Simple Technique to Boost Writing, Learning and Thinking—for Students, Academics and Nonfiction Book Writers".

The key to good and efficient writing lies in the intelligent organization of ideas and notes. This audiobook helps students, academics, and other knowledge workers to get more done, write intelligent texts, and learn for the long run. It teaches you how to take smart notes and ensure they bring you and your projects forward.

The Take Smart Notes principle is based on established psychological insight and draws from a tried and tested note-taking technique: the Zettelkasten. This is the first comprehensive guide and description of this system in English, and not only does it explain how it works, but also why. It suits students and academics in the social sciences and humanities, nonfiction writers and others who are in the business of reading, thinking and writing.

Instead of wasting your time searching for your notes, quotes or references, you can focus on what really counts: thinking, understanding and developing new ideas in writing.

Dr. Sönke Ahrens is a writer and researcher in the field of education and social science. He is the author of the award-winning book "Experiment and Exploration: Forms of World Disclosure" (Springer).

Since its first publication, How to Take Smart Notes has sold more than 100,000 copies and has been translated into seven languages.

Audio while cleaning and print for a deeper study and much better comprehension for my neuro type! I’ve always had issues with teachers just talking without also showing notes so I’ve known since I was 30 how hard audio is for me but like with anything else the more you expose yourself to the activity the better and easier it becomes so audio is for now always my 2nd copy or 1st then I see if I’d need the print! About the book game changer highly recommended! Teaches you how to teach yourself essentially then goes on to , as if that weren’t enough, teaches you how to make something productive out of whatever you read!

I loved having both print & audio

This is absolutely incredible that this is not mandatory reading and implementation in today's education. This is a great method for learning and keeping track of what you have learned. It is awesome to use open source software like obsidian and AI models like Claude to go and organize all these thoughts and ideas using this method.

Critical to understanding and adapting to today and tomorrow

The zettelkasten system described is fascinating, anecdotes are thought provoking, narration is clear and easy to listen to. -1 star overall due to poor chapter naming (does not match in book chapters so it can be hard to find a key passage you want to hear again).

Excellent resource

Incredible book, a must read in my opinion. The concepts of smart notes and the workflow of how it works should be taught to everyone.

The best book I’ve read on learning

Slow read and unexciting. But useful for many. Maybe it is better to read the book.

A little slow
