Historia
The Happiness Hypothesis is about ten Great Ideas. Each chapter is an attempt to savor one idea that has been discovered by several of the world's civilizations—to question it in light of what we now know from scientific research, and to extract from it the lessons that still apply to our modern lives and illuminate the causes of human flourishing. Award-winning psychologist Jonathan Haidt, the author of The Righteous Mind, shows how a deeper understanding of the world's philosophical wisdom and its enduring maxims can enrich and even transform our lives.

Resumen del Editor
Few of us are immune to the ideas we absorbed as children. We learned how to get approval or disapproval by creating the kinds of selves who would fit in and succeed with the "right" jobs, relationships, possessions, and so on. Even if we rebel against these ingrained notions by going in the opposite direction, we are still controlled by them. Either way, as adults we are often left feeling anxious or depressed because who we really are has been ignored.
Author Ira Israel, a uniquely multidisciplinary therapist, offers a powerful, step-by-step path to recognizing the ways we've worked to get our needs met and changing them with an approach that allows for understanding and accepting who we really are, the recognition of our true calling, and the path to the authentic love we were born deserving.

Historia
John Bradshaw is arguably the most accomplished and well-known leader alive today in the addictions field. He taught us about functional and dysfunctional families, showed us how shame could become toxic and poisonous to our core selves, and helped us understand and heal the wounded, vulnerable "inner child" conceived by, and thriving in, that environment. In Post-Romantic Stress Disorder (PRSD), Bradshaw gives readers a clear explanation of the difference between falling in love, lust, and true love.

Dead cats. That's the image many people conjure up when you mention curiosity. An image perpetuated by a dusty old proverb that has long represented the extent of our understanding of the term. Behind nearly every adult who is accused of a crime, becomes addicted to drugs or alcohol, or who is severely mentally ill and acting out in public, there is usually at least one extremely stressed-out parent. This parent may initially react with the bad news of their adult child behaving badly with, "Oh no!" followed by, "How can I help to fix this?" A very common third reaction is the thought, "Where did I go wrong - was it something I said or did, or that I failed to do when my child was growing up that caused these issues? Is this really somehow all my fault?"

Disappointing
Though it has a few interesting nuggets, a large part is a rant against US-style capitalism and civilizational alienation. That’s fine (and even quite interesting), but it has nothing to do with what the title promises. Often too esoteric, it lacks an editor (lots of repetition and lacks structure), and a more down to earth approach. I also disliked the author’s narration (often professional voice over artists do a far better job). Overall rather disappointed.

Insights into how our past shapes us and what to do about it
Lots of books say how childhood occurrences affect one’s life in adulthood. Few state why. Even fewer suggest what to do about it. I came across this book from reading Dr Margret Paul’s works (she wrote the forward). I was very pleasantly surprised.

GORGEOUS. Page turner!!!!!
Absolutely loved it. An important, mind and soul expanding, life upleveling, thought-provoking, fascinating, page-turner book. I will listen to it many times. Thank you Ira Israel for writing it and pouring your heart into the narration!

Not my cup of tea
I found the book to be not what I was expecting. To me, this book is repetitive and focuses on Buddhist principles, mindfulness, and being your authentic self. Not my cup of tea.

Missing the "How to Survive" Part!
The only chapter I enjoyed was the last chapter...
it gave several suggestions...
I think they missed a huge part of the book's appeal (when judging a book by its "cover") because most of us want the part where the author explains how to survive....

I have two big gripes with this book
The first is that it mentions how all parents did their best in the process of raising their children, and that children should be empathetic on their parents, just as parents should be empathetic on their children. This is an over-generalization. What about the parents who sexually assaulted their children at the age of three? Should you have empathy for them because they did their best? I don’t think so. The book does mention something to the affect of “unless your parent was a psychopath…” but I with they would go into a bit more detail to validate those of us out there whose parents were emphatically NOT good people - in every sense of the word. I don’t think it’s good to forgive those who do not deserve forgiveness.
Secondly, the book states that “If you don’t want people to sexualize you, then stop wearing sexual clothing.” This completely invalidates those of us who are victims of the crime of sexual assault and harassment. Human bodies are just that - human bodies, and regardless of whether I’m wearing six inch heels and a small bit of clothing around the waist with nothing else, it is still your fault for fantasizing about me and sexualizing me in such a way. I hate the inability to conceive the human body as anything but sexual in our society, and the authors of this book only continue that incredibly bias point of view. They enable sexual assault by enabling the sexualizer. I would not want to be around the authors as they do not validate human condition. Do not recommend.
