Resumen del Editor

How can you achieve long-lasting happiness? Or transform your relationship with fear, death, or grief? What is happiness anyway? All these questions (and more) are asked and answered in How to Die Happy.

Exploring themes around life "at Earth School"—depression, consumption, distraction, emotions, ego, and the pursuit of success, How to Die Happy examines why many of us often feel off-center. It's a guide to happiness that embraces the paradoxical impermanence of this sought-after prize.

Former high-functioning alcoholic adman Martin O'Toole once lived a wild life of excess, oblivious of how childhood trauma had profoundly impaired his emotional maturation. A suicide attempt was the launchpad for his learning about mental health's complexities—lessons, he muses, he "ought to have been taught as a child".

He left London for the tropical island of Bali on a mission to heal his neuroses. This extensive self-help process uncovered what he calls the "anatomy of happy"—a methodology detailed in this book. Part curated wisdom, part handbook, part memoir, How to Die Happy distils the secrets to living and dying well. It cherry-picks Eastern philosophies like Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism, connecting such mindfulness to psychological practices. Combining tales of self-suffering, forgiveness, and the miraculous healing power of psychedelic plant medicines, it offers a host of practical utilities to enjoy a vibrant and contented life.

These are not lessons from an enlightened guru or a PhD but by a self-professed, fallible "man on the mend". He deftly tackles serious subject matter in fun, often self-effacing, and lighthearted ways.

Today, we face material distractions at every turn. This book offers tools to help you find inner peace and happiness in a world that needs it more than ever. This is one self-care book you must hear before you die.

Simplifying the complex

It’s one beautifully curated assemblage of timeless wisdom, speckled across a spectrum of infinite wonder. I’ve never seen a book so eloquently bring together such diverse positions of philosophical wisdom, from all arenas into one. On top of that, it’s all magnificently intertwined in the most seamlessly progressive fashion imaginable. The anatomy of happy makes so much sense it’s a wonder that it could be this simple. Is it really that simple? After reading this book I’m convinced that it truly is! Thank you Martin

Beautiful listen, full of insight and even guided meditations

I loved listening to this book on my walks in nature. It contains a lot of insights from the author’s personal journey through his life about practices and perspectives that can remind you to live in joy and in presence.
I also absolutely loved the guided meditations in between chapters to be reminded of the present moment and my breath.
