I have read the book and listened to the audiobook at this point, and I love them both.

There’s a great deal of grief and catharsis in this story. It offers powerful allegory for the price of power, the inherent violence of patriarchy, and the oppressive potential of religion. The world building was effortlessly mingled with the pace of the narrative and the actions punctuating the plot.

The sapphic romance aspect was also very well done; the chemistry between the characters was easily felt. Additionally, the main character’s physical limitations are confronted directly in the narrative, which was refreshing to see. The presence of characters with developed pasts—well beyond the point of early adulthood—adds a depth to their development that I rarely encounter in romantasy.

The narrator sometimes laid on the emphatic expressions a bit heavy in a way that broke my emersion. Other than that I very much enjoyed the performance and found it very pleasant to my ears and felt it was tonally fit to the characters.
