The history of Taiwan is astonishing. Politically, Taiwan - was a warlord culture. The Portuguese, when passing by the island in the mid-1540s, called the island “Ilha Formosa,” which means “Beautiful Island”.

Then the Dutch came in the 1620s, searching for a base of operations for the Dutch East India Company.

Then the Han Chinese came in the 17th century. Many of these Han Chinese were refugees from the wars in China. This influx caused an explosive reaction.

Highly recommend this book to someone looking at having an introduction to this subject and its key concepts. the book was very engaging and instructor definitely knows his subject matter well.

Meh

Narrator tried their best, but the history is accurate. Dude wasn't very interesting to listen to, and his mispronounciations were jarring.

Narrator lacked proper pronunciation

Great overview of the history of Taiwan however the narrator mispronounced so many words that it was very distracting. Qing dynasty, Chinese Hakka we’re just a couple examples of the many words he mispronounced over and over and over again.

in-depth knowledge

This is a great book about Taiwan history. The author has sharp observation and in-depth knowledge of the history of Taiwan. A valuable reference.

I enjoyed this book without question and I listen it with incredible delight. I liked this book very much and I listen it with great pleasure. I highly recommend this guide for those in need of this type of information.

Wavetop History

Was hoping for a deeper history lesson. I am not a fluent Mandarin speaker but some of the names were absolutely butchered - Mao Zedong somehow become Mo (like in the 3 stooges). Good voice but some coaching on pronunciation would have been helpful. Also, several times there was a clear pause after a mispronounciation - no big deal, just edit it out.

Concise history

This was a quick history of Taiwan and very interesting. I enjoyed listening to the book.

Great info, but difficult to listen

I appreciate the work put into this effort and limited biases in the writing. My challenge, as a Taiwanese/Chinese speaker is the pronunciation of people, places and other references. It's obvious the narrator does not speak the language, but it's more than that. Even familiar names like Mao (pronounced 'Mo') make it very uncomfortable to listen to. I understand they are trying their best, but it would be beneficial to have it read by someone more familiar with the terminology and linguistics.

Average

Many birds are not pronounced correctly and it is a little bit boring but it does give the key details of Taiwan history, which allows a person to see where Taiwan, China and the US and Europe are in the current situation. If you want to get a basic idea of Taiwan history, this is one that worthwhile to listen to, but you may be thrown off by the not good pronunciations of the Chinese words, including the key people that were historically involved or are involved today.

The great source on the topic

I found this book very thought provoking. I was impressed by the obstacles, which I did not appreciate, that China will face if they attempted an invasion of Taiwan. Specifically, the challenges China would face are the sea conditions of the Taiwan strait, limited invasion beach choices, the size of the force required, the lack of strategic surprise and the preparedness of the ROC.
