Resumen del Editor

Learn to embrace the 3 C's of psychological hardiness to overcome stress and increase personal growth

Life is full of questions. How you answer these questions can determine which path your life takes. Think about how many questions you are faced with every day. It can be overwhelming. From the mundane to the profound, questions help you navigate everything from your daily routine to your career choices and relationships. Sometimes, asking the right question is just as important as the answer: What do you want out of life? Is it financial success? A loving family? Career achievement? Maybe you are coping with a serious illness. Whatever your goal may be, you have undoubtedly encountered barriers that slow your progress. One of the biggest of these barriers is stress. Scientific research has found that your ability to resist the damaging effects of stress - your hardiness - can reduce stress-related illness and strengthen your ability to thrive under pressure.

Hardiness, written by respected clinical and research psychologists, will help develop your psychological hardiness which, in turn, enables you to enjoy more of life's rewards. Mastering the 3 C's of hardiness - commitment, control, and challenge - is essential to increasing hardiness and responding effectively to stressful situations. This invaluable guide provides exercises and activities, based on 30 years of research, specifically designed to increase your hardiness in all areas of your personal and professional life. This book will help you:

  • Understand how hardiness is assessed to evaluate and improve your response to stress
  • Unlock your new potential made possible by a better understanding of hardiness
  • Examine real-life examples and case studies of psychological hardiness
  • Increase your engagement in the surrounding world
  • Capitalize on opportunities for your personal growth

Hardiness: Making Stress Work for You to Achieve Your Life Goals can help you move toward becoming healthier, more self-actualized, and increasingly satisfied with your life and future.

Hardiness is the missing piece

I often heard people talk about perseverance, resilience, grit, 'power through' and I thought I just needed to apply myself if I wanted to achieve my goals but it was until I got a copy of Hardiness that everything fit in, like a puzzle - hardiness was the missing piece. Now I realize that whereas grit is about pushing yourself despite consequences, hardiness is about recognizing limits and adapting. I also realized that hardiness is the linchpin in developing the ability to use stress and challenges as catalysts for growth.

I liked how the authors explain the role that hardiness plays on the 3C's (Commitment, Challenge and Control) as well as the instrument to measure with the Hardiness resilience gauge. The other aspect I liked about this book, it was written using words that are easy to understand (English is my second language) and the narrators' voice made it easy for me to understand.

This is one of those books where it is worth getting, not just the hardcopy but the audio and eBook versions as well. I got the audiobook, which is making the overall book a delight to read and listen.

As many books show us, common sense is not common practice

At a glance, it seems like another "feel good book". However, the examples the authors share with us make us more related to situations where we may have used hardiness and we are proud of those moments in our lives.

The audio book is very well read and I recommend it if you are a good "learner on the fly" while you are doing other things that are part of your routine and can also listen to this audio book.

3Cs for several hours

The book proposes Hardiness as a combination of 3Cs, commitment, control, and challenge to succeed in life. These can be summed as finding meaning in what we do, exercising self-control and striving for accomplishments. Some more characteristics and descriptions of these 3Cs are covered. So far good. Beyond that most of the book is filled with anecdotal evidence and cherry picking to support the hardiness narrative. Some of the success stories are so far fetched that they can be attributed to numerous other factors or to resilience. Then it gets into each profession, Music, athletics, lawyers, and so on to prove the privacy of three Cs in each field. This part tends to be very repetitive, and soon you lose interest. This book could simply be condensed into a couple of pages of summary of how commitment, control, and challenge are good traits to develop.
