Resumen del Editor

A. W. Tozer was a man who knew the voice of God. He shared this experience with every true child of God. With all those who are called by the grace of God to share in the mystical union that is possible with Him through His son Jesus.

Tozer fought against much dryness and formality in his day. Considered a mighty man of God by most Evangelicals today, he was unconventional in his approach to spirituality and had no qualms about consulting everyone from Catholic saints to German Protestant mystics for inspiration on how to experience God more fully.

Here are two writings by Tozer that touch on the heart of this goal: "Revelation Is Not Enough" and "The Speaking Voice". Also included is a bonus chapter, "The Menace of the Religious Movie".

This is meat to sink your spiritual teeth into. Tozer's writings will show you the way to satisfy your spiritual hunger.

How was the narrator?

It was good, but I wish there was a different narrator. It was kinda dry.

Hollywood exposed

As with all the Tozer books, this one drove me to deeper thought and meditation on my Lord. The last chapter, designated audibly as 3 but labeled 4 in the table of contents, was part of why I chose this book: an exposé of Hollywood. Aptly put in such well-chosen verbiage as I could never have crafted, it expressed the deep urgings of my heart about the movie industry in general and Christian movies in particular. I have never seen a Christian movie, no matter how artfully presented, that did not take liberties with biblical facts and events, all for the sake of drama. Tozer expresses here the wrongness of thinking we have to “help” the Holy Spirit and the Word to bring the gospel with acting, a faking of emotion and pathos. I have been deeply concerned today with the amount of time people waste on movies, most of which degrade the human spirit by drenching them in evil and filth. Scripture says in Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Are we thinking of godly things when we watch horror movies and thrillers, or disinformative “Christian” movies? Psalm 90:12 also tells us to use our limited number of days on this earth wisely: So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Reading Tozer’s insights on God’s holy word is an infinitely better way to spend time with our Lord than watching any movie, whether it professes to be Christian or secular.

Started of fantastically on point, then...

The first two chapters were amazing. Deep truths were being brought up in what was seemingly was building to how to hear God's voice today. Then it took a sharp, unexpected turn from listening to the voice of God to the evils of movies, movie making, acting as a whole and how much worse it is when done by Christians, for Christians, and to push a Christian message.

It was a bizarre twist that seemed out of place given the stated premise. I'll likely still reference the first chapter or two, and perhaps a nugget or two from the rest of the book, but ironically enough, the second half Is a cautionary tale of not discerning God's voice from your own fears/biases when publishing a book about what God's will is, or simply acting on God's will.

Disappointing

While I recommend reading or listening to other books by Tozer, about half of this audio is rather out-dated and deals with an issue the church isn’t really dealing with currently.

Not that great

The huge section on Christian movies was very strange to me. The movie Ben Hur was what first interested me in Christ. I had heard many sermons preached using what Tozer identifies as “approved methods.” But the depiction of Christ changing a man’s life was compelling. The Spirit did the rest. I don’t mind that Tozer doesn’t think movies are good. But the harsh presentation of his opinion may not be helpful to the cause of Christ.
