Resumen del Editor

Magic is just one more thing to be stolen....

For over 100 years, the Temple of Ran has been sacrificing young wizards in order to steal their power. When Lorit discovers that he holds the rare ability to use magic, he becomes their next target.

At first, he runs, working to master his abilities on the move so that one day he might be able to resist them. But that was before the Temple targets his beloved sister, Chihon. In order to save her life, he infuses her with his own power.

Now, they're both targets.

Together, they'll battle to make the world safe for magicians everywhere...if they can survive the temple's power-hungry priests. If they can't, their enemy will absorb their magic and become unstoppable.

Experience the start of an epic fantasy series filled with dark magic, sinister villains, and non-stop adventure. It's perfect for fans of D. K. Holmberg, Will Wight, and K. F. Breene.

Very good epic fantasy

As a fan of old school epic fantasy, this scratches an itch. James Eggebeen (new author I'm now following, it seems.) etched a solid story about a brother and sister protecting magic. Loved it. Can't wait to see what happens next. The series title kind of gives some stuff away, I guess, but it'll be great to see HOW Lorit and Chihon become masters.

Joe Hempel delivers a stellar performance. I definitely recommend.

Great Magic System!

James Eggebeen has created an awesome magic system and has some great world building in this story. It’s a fun fantasy world and the story kept me guessing. I really liked the differences between the priests and the wizards and how they use their power. Very clever. Joe Hempels narration was great and really helped enhance the story. If you like an emphasis on magic in your fantasy books I’d recommend checking this book out!

Good Beginnings

James Eggebeen's Foundling Wizard is a fun start to a series reminiscent of other fantasy works by Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson or Terry Goodkind. I enjoyed the book a lot and I look forward to listening to other installments, especially if Joe Hempel will be providing the voice work on them. By far, I found that Joe made up for a few of the shortcomings in the novel.

I did enjoy the story of Lorit and his journey towards becoming a full-fledged wizard with awesome powers. However, the author could have fleshed out a lot more backstory and world-building and this could have been an amazing story. The bones are all there and they're fantastic, but at times the details are left to the audience's imagination. We have a fairly good sense of who Lorit is and where his story began, but there is a bit of a lack when it comes to any secondary characters and their motivations as the book moves along.

But perhaps some of my concerns and questions are addressed in future books, so I'll look forward to the continuing journey of these young wizards as they find their place in this world. I think Eggebeen has a good sense for what makes a good epic fantasy story and I will be checking out more of his works.

monotone/ story is also lackluster

The story wasn't bad but it wasn't great either it had some interesting ways of using magic but... Going with the narrative that it had, I had to go back over many parts of the story because every character almost sounds the same and carries the same monotone sound I kinda just zoned out of the book. The story is also lackluster I'm not sure how to describe it things happen; just how it's written tries to draw a detailed story but makes it kind of bland. Even the magic fights that happen are dull.

YA Epic Fantasy

Lorit, an 18-year old boy from a modest family in the countryside, discovers one day that he has magic powers. Contrary to this being good news, Lorit has to face now a dangerous fate. He has to leave his home and his family to avoid being caught by the priests of the Temple of Ran, who are always on the lookout for new mages in order to capture their magic through torture.

This was an entertaining listen! The book is mainly aimed at young adult readers, as the main characters are around this age. There are some adult characters, expert mages or sorcerers but they just lead Lorit and his friend from a distance, and are only indirectly involved in the story. The characters are interesting enough for this kind of book, their relationships are fresh and the dialogs seem natural. I would have liked a bit more character development but it is just a personal preference. As I have said, the character development is akin to similar books (young adult fantasy).

There are very dark moments in the story, and some unexpected deaths. This made the story more realistic, as it did not feel sugar-coated for younger readers. I wish I was able to connect with the characters better than I did, as some of these events are quite crude, but I was not able to feel “enough” for the deceased and suffering characters.

I also would have liked some more world-building. It is true that some aspects of this world we are only discovering them along with Lorit, but I think some aspects could have had some more depth. We will probably know more in future installments.

Joe Hempel delivered an excellent and top-notch narration, as always. He is able to bring the characters to life in a unique way, transmitting their emotions but being subtle about it at the same time. It was definitely like listening to real people! All characters were easily recognizable thanks to subtle differences in style and voice. This was definitely an easy listen.

Great Start to a new Epic Fantasy series

A young man discovers he has magic powers one day. His mother tells him he has two choices: Join the priests to train, which is an awful proposition as they steel powers and destroy young magicians, or RUN! Lorit chooses to run, starting a new adventure in which he develops psychic connections with a 400 year old wizard and sorceress who guide him through the many perils he and his friends will face on the journey to safety. The priests, trying to get to him, target his sister Chihon, and in order to save her, Lorit infuses her with some of his magic. Now they both must run, danger is around every corner and some friends will lose their lives while others have questionable motives....

Joe Hempel is one of the best narrators out there for fantasy and horror. He has a unique ability to do subtle changes with his voice that you may not even realize he has done, but they imbue the characters dialog to fit the emotions of the situations. And in this story, Lorit goes through the gammit from happiness, to great sorrow and horror at some of the things that happen on this journey.

I'm looking forward to continuing the series!

Was pretty good fantasy

First I received this book free, second it was good but not great. Felt like a modern author channeling Robert Jordan and it kinda drug on. The world building however was really good and I will def be listening to the second book when I can get it.

Intriguing start to the serie

As a disclaimer, I was offered a copy of this book for the sake of an honest review.

Foundling Wizard is a tale of magic in a world full of distrust for wizards. The storytelling is interesting, and the workings of magic are original. The worldbuilding seems to be a little superficial in this tome, but that can be excused by the limited education of the main character. There is however a lot of room for that to be explored later in the serie.

The narration was pleasant and solid. Overall, this book was a good listen.
