Espionage, current events, and rich characters

An exceptionally gifted narrator, telling a compelling story. The author brought current events into focus, while transporting readers to regions and people in the world that are living out these gruesome political realities on a daily basis.

Engaging spy thriller

Lots of twists and turns in a story involving Arabic terrorists and criminals chasing an immigrant boy with incriminating information. He is aided by an off-the-books British spy and an attractive psychologist. Excellent narrator.

Good story, Syrian refugees’ struggle to find safety, presented in a well written way which includes the struggles (understatement) and hardships endured …. and the horrors of Isis.

Brilliant

I read so many thrillers that they can become a bit tedious. Firefly was a total and unexpected departure from the usual formula of this genre. The character development, the exploration of moral quandaries, the cat-and-mouse quality... many elements merge successfully here making it a delightful, rewarding read!

Better than the usual thriller

With its insight into the migrant experience and top-notch suspense, despite a few too many lost cell phones, this is a thriller worth reading. It avoids the formulaic feel that makes so many thrillers boring to all but die-hard fans, even though it does follow the accepted formula. The "OMG, how will they get out of this one" scene was especially fraught.

I object, however, to the comparisons with John Le Carre and Mick Herron. Firefly lacks the moral ambiguity and the questions that put those authors above the rest of the genre. Of course there's nothing morally ambiguous about a terrorist (and attempts to show their humanity through back-story usually fail), but this book doesn't address the systems that propel the situations found in the book the way Le Carre and Herron do. Herron is far superior, as well, at portraying female characters, i.e. making them seem like real humans.

Even though Firefly doesn't rise above the genre, as some claim, it's at the top of its class.
