Resumen del Editor

The third political thriller in the "Executive" series by Gary Grossman.

The clock is ticking down to an attack on America’s most vulnerable natural resource: Water. Our nation’s water resources are high on terrorist target lists, but low on America’s consciousness. Water sources are largely unprotected, providing open access to any enemy with chemicals and biotoxins.

So far we’ve been lucky. But that luck won’t last.

This is the all-too-real-and-present danger facing President Morgan Taylor and Secret Service Agent Scott Roarke as they desperately try to prevent hell-bent terrorists from destroying America and its infrastructure city by city, and state by state.

Fact-based in frightening detail, Executive Command is a political thriller that will leave you pondering its strong possibility the next time you pour a glass of water.

Completion of a great political thriller series

The 3 novel Executive Series by Gary Grossman includes 60 hours of listening time although John McLain's excellent narration can be easily enjoyed at higher listening speeds. The series can be described as espionage, political, or suspense thrillers; it is all three. The primary protagonists are Secret Service Agent Scott Roark, Roark's lawyer girlfriend who is a constitutional authority, and on-again, off-again US President Morgan Taylor. The characters are well developed and vivid. The situations are believable.

I ran across this series by accident early this year and set the books aside to listen to when time was available. My expectations were low, but this series meets and exceeds all possible expectations. Unlike the first two novels in the series which dealt mostly with the US Constitution and the powers of the presidency in time of domestic crisis, Executive Command deals with major incidents of domestic terrorism.

I highly recommend Executive Command which stands on its own, but listen to Executive Actions and Executive Treason first.

So so

I liked the story concept but it was. Not carried through well with character development and resolution at the end. Some of the dialogues were dorky. I was so frustrated with the narrator saying quidado (kee da do) instead of cuidado (see you dah do) as it should have been with a softness to the “d” sounds. Sheesh.

Good story. Narration distracting.

It amazes me how a person reading this pretty good book for others enjoyment did not bother to learn how to pronounce fairly simple words. For example any middle school Spanish student knows that Ciudad is pronounced See You Dad and not Q-dad. Most distracting and, unfortunately, quite repetitive too. Several other words were similarly butchered.

The Third is not a charm

I have now listened to 3 of the 4 books in this series. In my opinion the first was the best. Sometimes with each new book an author's writing improves and the story becomes richer and more satisfying so if I like the first book or if it is ok, I generally am willing to try the second and maybe the third. If the writing and story don't improve by then I am done. That is where I am with this series. The characters aren't growing, there is no added depth, they might even be getting more shallow. Like the second book, the author tells us how people feel but doesn't show us. For example he tells us Katie is the love of Scott's life but he doesn't illustrate the depth of his feelings with descriptions of that are beyond cliches. Plus his attempts are all about having sex. Actually, that seems to be all their relationship is about. Another example is the speaker of the house who is a caricature that also lacks depth. The plot is also getting tiresome. Still chasing after the same men and they too have devolved into caricatures. The narrator does a decent job. My recommendation, listen to the first book and call it good on this series and find another.
