Thirteen-year-old Evan Hanson is always the last in her family to know what's going on. Her father, Gene, who's been meaner since he began serving in Vietnam, isn't around much, and she likes it better that way. But then her brother, Adam, gets drafted and her anti-war mother, Endura, takes him across the border to Canada, leaving Evan alone with Gene and her younger, special needs brother, Teddy.
When he realizes Endura isn't returning, Gene takes Evan and Teddy to Eat and Get Gas, his mother's cafe and gas station. There, as well as her no-nonsense but loving grandma, Evan encounters Aunt Vivian, a teasing but caring know-it-all; Uncle Frankie, injured in Vietnam and suffering from PTSD; Paco, the draft dodger Frankie is hiding; Hal and Hubert, the strange but gentle next-door neighbors; and Louanne, Frankie's reserved sister. She is drawn in particular to Louanne, who was disfigured by a car accident that killed the rest of her and Frankie's family.
Evan finds a new freedom, and she starts to carve out a place for herself. She eventually, too, learns some of the family secrets she's been kept in the dark about—and comes to understand that her mother isn't coming back any time soon. Then, after reading a letter that wasn't meant for her, Evan discovers the biggest secret of all.

Engaging Story
I enjoyed JA Wright’s character development and storyline. I thought it was a great coming of age story, and having lived in the PNW for many years, I could appreciate the nuances woven into the setting. There were some clever twists, and I think it was well written.

Really great storytelling
I thoroughly enjoyed this book - got the audible version and was pleasantly surprised at how well/believable the narration matched the protagonist's voice.
As a kid myself in the early 1970's, I spent a lot of summers parked at my grandparents house and really felt the vibe of those days. I could also relate to the awkwardness - and fun/funny moments. Lots of interesting characters and situations that made me laugh, but also a lot of serious stuff happens that really made me care about Evan as she tries to keep her head up with all the tough, life-lessons swirling around her. Highly recommend!

Great Read!
There are so many themes written into this one memoir and J. A. Wright takes us on quite a journey that she endured in her early teens. Unexpected twists and turns are seemingly endless and her words remind me that life can sometimes sweep you away. Hopefully, like she did, you survive the ride. Thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook.

Gently but profoundly anti-war
I’m old enough to have lived in heat of the Vietnam War. Friends died in combat or came home irreparably damaged. Innocent Americans civilians died at the hands of our own civil authorities. Vietnam deeply changed us. We have not yet recovered. War is a very bad idea.
